Trane Incorporated is a manufacturer of heating, ventilating, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems. Incorporated by father (James) and son (Reuben) team in 1913, Trane has been known as an industry leader and innovator ever since.  Trane Inc. is a subsidiary of the global giant, Ingersoll Rand, and is also the successor company to the American Standard Companies.

Trane Inc. makes heating HVAC systems under the Trane and American Standard brand names. And both are very reliable premium air conditioners if I may say so.

As for headquarters, Trane has theirs in Swords, Ireland. That, perhaps, is the reason they are on the cutting edge of HVAC technology – both on the consumer and commercial levels.

The Trane Air Conditioner Review – A Brief Overview of this Top-notch Air Conditioner

Trane has been making high-performance central air conditioning units for a long time. Units that help maintain comfortable temperatures in your home in all seasons. With Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratings of up to 22, you can trust a Trane air conditioner to help you save on your energy bill. This puts Trane air conditioners at the top of the best air conditioner hierarchy.

No products found.

When it comes to design and engineering, Trane air conditioners have a whole lot more going for them than just good looks. Featuring aluminum coils that incorporate fins, you can expect enhanced airflow and fewer leaks as compared to copper coils. As for the refrigerant, Trane has moved from the chlorine and Bromine-based refrigerants that are harmful to the environment and uses R-410A.

As it often goes with innovators like Trane, their products always aim at making life easier. That’s exactly what you get from a Trane air conditioner, especially with their innovative TruComfort features. This is a feature that is designed to efficiently reduce humidity as they have longer run times at lower speeds (as compared to other ACs). This means they are better equipped to dehumidify a room than their competitors.

One fear many consumers have when looking for a powerful air conditioner is noise. Let me quickly allay your fears in this regard concerning Trane air conditioners. Thanks to impeccable engineering and a great cover that insulates sound well, Trane air conditioners have an average noise level of 70.1 dB, making them lower than the industry average of 71.25 dB. Bringing it closer to home, it simply means you can enjoy a good night’s sleep or enjoy an evening in front of the telly without being annoyed by the noise of your Trane air conditioner.

If you are looking for a modern air conditioner that is future proof, then getting a Trane air conditioner is the best thing you can do for yourself and your home. The Trane line of air conditioners features ComfortLink II communication technology, a proprietary technology that makes the air conditioners smart. ComfortLink II allows you to control your Trane air conditioner remotely from your tablet, smartphone, or any other smart device. However, to fully utilize it, you will have to unlock some advanced features by paying a monthly subscription.

When it comes to warranties, we wish Trane could have been more innovative in this department as well. Trane air conditioners, sadly, come with industry standard warranties – which are actually not bad at all. For instance, the Trane XR series central air conditioners come with a 10-year warranty, while the XL and XV models receive a 12-year cover. But that is if you register your Trane air conditioner within 60 days of installation.

Every Trane air conditioner also comes with a 10-year warranty on the outdoor coil and other internal components, something most AC manufacturers offer. Failure to register your Trane air conditioner will shorten the warranty on the compressor and parts to 5 years.

Now that you have a better understanding of what you are getting when you get a Trane air conditioner, let’s look at some of the most popular and reliable models you can choose from.

3 Models You Need to Know

Ready to bring a Trane air conditioner home?

With such a vast product line, it can be quite confusing to know which model to pick. Don’t worry, keep your cool, and read on. Below are some of the models that you can depend on to turn your home into a cool oasis no matter the blazing hot temperatures outside. One thing that makes these Trane air conditioners stand out from the competition is the great value for money they offer.

trane xr13

Image via Trane

The Trane XR13 is a single stage compressor air conditioner that has a SEER rating of up to 14.5. This means the unit will efficiently and effectively heat up your room in no time and save you a couple of bucks in utility bills while doing it.

Some things to look forward to in this popular Trane air conditioner include a robust and advanced technology Climatuff compressor, a Spine Fin outdoor coil, and a sound insulator. These are components that ensure smooth running, efficiency, and low noise levels. Speaking of sound, the Trane XR13 comes with an integrated fan system that not only helps with efficiency but also does a good job at noise reduction.

As or durability, the Trane XR13 comes with baked-on powder paint that helps prevent rusting of the body while the base pan is non-corrosive thanks to DuraTuff technology that prevents, apart from rust, warping and cracking.

This superb Trane air conditioner is definitely one to look out for whether you’re looking to augment your current HVAC system or the only one you have for your room. The only downside is that the Trane XR13 doesn’t come with ComfortLink II communicating technology.

trane xv18

Image via Trane

If you are looking for a variable-speed air conditioner, the Trane XV18 is it. This Trane air conditioner has a SEER rating of up to 18. And thanks to its ClimaTuff variable speed compressor, sound insulator, and an integrated fan system, this particular Trane air conditioner is as quiet as a ghost as it only registers a mere 55 decibels of noise.

The Trane XV18 features an aluminum Spine Fin coil which helps provide optimal heat transfer while keeping the coils corrosion free. Installation has never been easier as the Trane XV18 features a simplified 2-wire connection that makes installing easy.

Durability is another advantage that this Trane air conditioner will bring to your home as the galvanized steel louvered panels come coated in with corrosion resistant powder paint and the DuraTuff base pan that is widely known to be amongst the best on the market.

The Trane XV18 comes equipped with ComfortLink II communicating technology. This means the components can communicate for increased efficiency. It also means the system can self-diagnose when something goes wrong. This communication technology also enables you to communicate with your air conditioner via your smart device.

For keeping your home nice and cool, this is one of the best air conditioners you can employ. And the cherry on top is that this Trane air conditioner is Energy Star certified. So you can definitely trust it when it comes to efficiency and savings.

This Trane air conditioner may be pricey, but it will definitely pay you back in savings on your utility bill and also the unit’s durability.

Image via Trane

The Trane XV20i is one of the best air conditioners made by Trane. This is a high-efficiency air conditioning system that offers up to a whopping 21 SEER performance. The reason this Trane air conditioner is so efficient is because it uses dual compressors. This setup (of a smaller compressor coupled to a larger one) maximizes efficiency by consistently operating with the smaller compressor and only switches to the larger one when the system detects a drastic temperature change. With this system, it’s like having 2 units in a single housing unit.

No matter your room size, you’ll be glad to know that there is a Trane XV20i with enough power to keep it cool as it comes in 4 different sizes, namely a 2-ton, 3-ton, 4-ton, and 5-ton unit. The Trane XV20i also features, apart from the dual compressor, an adjustable fan motor, and a well-designed compressor sound insulator that do a great job of ensuring that the AC unit runs quietly.

For increased efficiency and ease of use, the Trane XV20i is also equipped with Trane's proprietary technology, the ComfortLink II system. Apart from enabling the components within the Trane XV20i, this system can also connect to your smart device so you can easily adjust the air conditioner’s settings remotely. This makes it so you arrive to an already chilled house. The ComfortLink II technology also helps prolong the life of the AC unit as it ensures that the unit is always operating at its optimum level.

As with every Trane air conditioner, this model is also built to last, thanks to the galvanized steel cabinets, a rustproof base pan, and zinc-coated screws and fasteners. Add a powder-paint finish and you have a Trane air conditioner that will be as durable as the best of them – maybe even so.

If your pockets are deep enough (air con only) for an AC unit, then this is definitely the Trane air conditioner to invest in.

And if you are struggling to make up your mind as to which Trane air conditioner you should have installed in your house, you should consider the Trane XV20i. Although it may be a pricey unit that commands a premium in the region for the unit alone, it definitely is worth the investment. However, if budget is an issue, perhaps you can settle for Trane XR13.

Whichever Trane air conditioner you opt for, one thing is certain – it will keep your home nice, cool, and comfortable for years to come.

Best AC Coil Cleaner – Keep Your Coils in Good Condition

The air conditioner is a modern development that most people can’t live without. With temperatures rising all over the world, the summer months can become unbearable due to the heat and humidity.

Fortunately, there’s no shortage of air conditioners that home owners can install to combat the heat and humidity.

Air conditioners are known to be significant investments and if you’re not doing proper maintenance, there’s a good chance that your unit will break down faster than expected. One of the most common problems that plague most AC units is dirty coils. With a dirty coil, the performance of your AC unit will likely be affected and trust that your bills will go through the roof.

The best way to maintain such coils is to clean it with an AC coil cleaner.

For this post, we will talk about the importance of cleaning your AC unit’s coils. Plus, we have made a list of some of the best cleaning agents and tools that you can use for cleaning the coils.

Comparison Table

Why You Need to Clean Your AC Coils

Nu-Calgon 4171-75 Evap Foam No Rinse Evaporator Coil Cleaner, 18 oz.

image via Amazon

The AC’s coils are some of the most important parts of the unit. Basically, there are two types of coils in an air conditioning system: the evaporator and condenser coils.

The evaporator coils absorb the heat and humidity from the air within the space. The condenser coils, on the other hand, expel that heat outside of the house or building.

So why should you bother cleaning your system’s coils?

Well, if the coils are covered in dust, dirt, and debris, they will not be able to effectively transfer heat. This can lead to all sorts of problems from the system overheating to higher energy consumption.

For the coils to transfer heat properly, the surfaces must be clean. When the exterior of the condenser coil is caked with dirt and grime, the heat becomes trapped inside and will not be properly released. Because the condenser coil is part of the outdoor system, it can get covered with dirt, smog, and other contaminants.

If the evaporator coil is covered in dirt and grime, its ability to remove heat and humidity from the room will be compromised. The evaporator coil is located inside the system so it’s frequently exposed to dirt and dust. This is especially true if you are not regularly cleaning the air filters where airborne particles can clog up the evaporator coil.

What Happens When You Skip AC Coil Cleaning?

ComStar 90-100 Coil King Professional Grade Concentrated Alkaline...

image via Amazon

If you value your investment for your home cooling, you should do regular maintenance and cleaning of your air conditioning unit – that includes the cleaning of the coils.

Otherwise, expect the following consequences:

  • Higher energy consumption – When the AC coils are dirty, your unit will have to work harder and run longer in order to keep your space cool. This means higher energy consumption which also means more expensive bills. Just because you have an “Eco-certified” unit, it doesn’t mean that you should skip on maintenance and cleaning.
  • More breakdowns – A system that works harder and longer will eventually run into a wall. Because the unit is always pushed beyond its limits, the parts will wear out faster and may lead to a breakdown.
  • Shorter lifespan – Failing to clean and maintain your air conditioner in general is a good way to shorten its lifespan.

Regular maintenance and cleaning are the best ways to protect your investment. Most AC units are located outdoors and the outside elements can really wreak havoc to your air conditioner. Regular maintenance ensures that your coils stay in good working condition.

Which is the Best AC Coil Cleaner?

For this section, we list some of the best products that you can use to clean the coils of your air conditioner.

Non-acid, alkaline-based product, Formulated with the best available foaming detergents, Quickly penetrate and dissolve greasy dirt and grime, Foams and brightens

The first product on our list is the Nu-Calgon 4291-08 Nu-Brite which is an alkaline-based cleaning agent for the condenser coil.

What can we say? This stuff really works. The product creates a foam that will then proceed to melt all the dirt and grime that built up on the condenser coil. The mixing ratio is 4:1 which is sufficient enough to get the job done. Sometimes, I don’t even need to scrub.

This is a rather caustic cleaning age, so please use proper protection when using this cleaner. If you are not so sure on how to use the product, there are plenty of videos online that can help.

Aside from the cleaning agent, you also need a brush or applicator to get the job done. The Midwest Hearth Air Conditioner Whisk Brush will definitely help you get the job done.

While you can certainly use some old brushes for cleaning the coils, using the right tool matters. This is the type of brush that is used by HVAC plumbers and heating contractors, so you don’t have to be concerned if you’re going to damage anything.

This brush has synthetic bristles which means that it can clean the coils effectively without being damaged by cleaning agents. The bristles are tough enough for a thorough brushing but it’s not that hard that it can cause damage to the coils.

Keep this one handy for your regular AC maintenance.

ComStar 90-100 Coil King Professional Grade Concentrated Alkaline...
  • Comstar’s coil King is a premium external alkaline condenser coil cleaner and brightener for coils located outdoors
  • It restores heat transferring qualities to 100 percent efficiency by removing lint, grease and dust and dirt build-up
  • Stronger than most, the foaming action pushes out these contaminants from between the aluminum fins

Premium external alkaline condenser coil cleaner, Restores heat transferring qualities to 100 percent efficiency, Foaming action

The ComStar 90-100 Coil King Condenser Coil Cleaner is another alkaline based cleaner with a serious coil cleaning pedigree.

This cleaning agent also foams but not as much as the previous cleaner. However, the lack of foaming action doesn’t mean that it’s will not remove the dirt and grime from your condenser. Quite the opposite, it does a great job of removing any undesirables from the coil but it doesn’t corrode the materials.

The cleaner is available in multiple different amounts and is typically diluted with 3-10 parts of water. The correct ratio will depend on the amount of buildup on your coils. For the first usage, it’s best that you follow the instructions from the label. It’s also worth noting that this alkaline cleaner is quite affordable as well.

Nu-Calgon 4171-75 Evap Foam No Rinse Evaporator Coil Cleaner, 18 oz.
  • Evap Foam will liquefy dirt, grease, oil, and other residues quickly and easily
  • Since it is fortified with corrosion inhibitors, it is safe for use on metals and other materials

Now, we have another product from Nu-Calgon and this time, it’s an evaporator coil cleaner. The Nu-Calgon 4171-75 Evap Foam No Rinse Evaporator Coil Cleaner
is another heavy-duty cleaning agent that I really like.

The detergent will start foaming as soon as it comes in contact with dirt and grime. I don’t know about you but I really love when a cleaning agent foams because I feel like it’s really doing a deep-cleaning job. It comes in an aerosol can so it’s really a breeze to apply. Just point and squeeze.

This is a no-rinse formula which means you can just spray and then leave the foam to evaporate, and then you’re done. While it’s a good convenience feature, I still tend to rinse off the detergent for a more complete cleanup. But that’s just me.

This product smells great as well.

Frost King ACF19 Foam Coil Cleaner, 19Oz, 19 Ounce
  • Heavy-duty foam dissolves stains, removes grease & oil, and loosens dirt
  • Cleans coils, fan blades, and reusable air filters
  • Neutralizes odors from standing water in drain pans

Key features

Foaming heavy duty detergent cleaner, Low VOC formula, Fin
Scrubbing Cap, Water based formula, Pleasant lemon fragrance

The A/C SAFE AC-921 Air Conditioner Coil Foam Cleaner has landed on this list because it is both an evaporator and condenser cleaner.

This detergent-based cleaner works wonders in removing those resilient stains and grime from your AC coils. Since it’s a spray, you can just easily aim the nozzle and fire away. The product is formulated to be non-corrosive so you can just spray and forget, without the need to rinse. However, I would not recommend doing that.

The cleaning agent also has a pleasant smell which just can’t be said with similar coil cleaning agents in the market. This is also a fairly versatile AC coil cleaner because you can use it for other cleaning jobs like your car radiators, lawn mower engines, refrigerator and freezer coils, dehumidifier coils, and more.

CRC 3196 Foaming Coil Cleaner, 18 oz Aerosol Can, Clear/Yellow
  • Does not require rinsing in most cleaning applications
  • No flash or fire point

Key features

Heavy duty foaming detergent, Alkaline detergent blend, Low odor
formula, No-rinse formula, No class I or II ozone depleting chemicals or
chlorinated solvents

The CRC Foaming Coil Cleaner is another spray foaming detergent. This is an easy recommendation since it can be used to clean both the evaporator and condenser coils.

This coil cleaner is quite similar to the other spray detergents on this list. It’s very easy to apply as you just have to spray directly into the coils without the need to mix water and the solution. Again, this is a no-rinse formula which is a nice convenience feature.

What I like best about the CRC cleaner is the fact that there are no harmful that are used to formulate the product. This means that you can have the peace of mind that you’re not damaging the ozone.

Again, it’s hard to go wrong with this one as it’s frequently used by HVAC professionals.

Keep Your Coils Clean

That wraps up our quick guide and list of the best cleaning agents and tools that you can use to clean your AC coils.

When using these cleaning agents and tools, please read the label and follow the application guidelines. You don’t really want to risk damaging your AC unit or worse, injure yourself.

Reviews: Goodman Air Conditioner – Is This Brand Worth the Money

If the summertime temps leave you hot under the collar, you are definitely not alone. About 84% of American homes have some kind of air conditioning. Also, about 90% of modern homes are equipped with a central AC system. If you consider yourself to be an eco-conscious consumer, you’ll be happy to know that modern air conditioners are now more energy efficient. This means that you get to be cool and comfortable for less money.

If you are in the market for a good air conditioning unit, you have come to the right place. Today, we’ll be taking an in-depth look at the Goodman air conditioner product line. Is this brand worth your money? Let’s find out!

 About the Goodman Company

The Goodman brand has been around since 1982 and they claim to have focused on something else, other than simple brand-recognition consumer advertising – which is probably why they’re not a well-known brand.

From the company’s About page:

Since 1982, we've focused on helping millions and millions of homeowners achieve reliable, high-quality and affordable indoor comfort with products that continue to be designed, engineered and assembled in the U.S.A.  As a result, the Goodman brand has earned the loyalty and respect from thousands of local independent heating and cooling professionals across North America.

Goodman focuses on providing quality products for specific indoor comfort needs and indoor air quality solutions. However, it seems that most of their products come at a rather budget-friendly price, considering that many AC units can be pricey.

The Goodman brand is often recommended by HVAC professionals, as claimed by the company. But is it really a good brand? Well, we’re about to find out.

Reviewing the Goodman Air Conditioner Units

Goodman 4 Ton 18 SEER Air Conditioner DSXC180481

image via Amazon

The Goodman AC units are known for their high efficiency along with their very competitive prices. For this review, we’ll provide the aspects that we liked and didn’t like about the brand. Also, we’re going to talk about the best models from the company’s product line. Then, we’re going to highlight some reviews and feedback from actual customers.

 Pros and Cons

The main selling point of the brand is definitely their competitive pricing. When you compare the brand to other AC manufacturers like Lennox, Amana, and Trane, you’ll see that Goodman does a great job of offering units that don’t cost an arm and leg.

For instance, the GSX130181 Condenser Central Air Conditioning 13 SEER unit only costs about $1,200. The Goodman GSX160481 4 Ton 16 SEER Air Conditioner model only costs about $2,400. One of my favorites, the Goodman GSX160361 3 Ton 16 SEER Air Conditioner only comes at a $1,100 price tag. That’s simply unheard of when it comes to central air conditioning units.

So you are probably thinking, “they are basically just cheap ACs, right?” “How can they possibly offer cheap models without sacrificing quality?”

Well, Goodman’s business model is based on their own distributor-dealer sales model and market positioning. So they can put out quality products without compromising their quality. However, you have to be wary of unauthorized Goodman dealers and contractors out there.

Most of the air conditioning systems by Goodman come with a Lifetime Limited Warranty.

If the compressor of the AC units ever fails, a replacement will be given provided that the original buyer of the system live in the same single-family residence. The main reason for
compressor breakdown is when the refrigerant in the suction lines start to accumulate. Any refrigerant in liquid form will be trapped in the suction accumulator which helps ensure that the compressor operation is fine and all.

Lifetime warranty is definitely a positive but I encourage you not to get too excited. The average lifespan of an AC unit is 12-15 years, give or take. Plus, you still have to pay the extra fee for the labor in case of a repair.

If you want to take advantage of this warranty, make sure that you register your unit with the Goodman company or otherwise, you have to settle with the 5-year warranty coverage.

These days, air conditioner manufacturers are making use of aluminum coils as a potential solution to the industry-wide problem of formicary corrosion that happens in the copper tube aluminum fin evaporator coils.

It’s a good thing that Goodman is one such manufacturer. The use of aluminum coils also allows the company to keep the price down without sacrificing efficiency.

Many HVAC professionals and companies favor the Goodman brand.

The Goodman air conditioner units offer good reliability at a decent price which is why many HVAC professionals recommend the brand. While it’s not the most popular brand out there, many professionals still prefer Goodman because they want their clients to be satisfied while keeping the costs low.

HVAC companies and pros also trust Goodman because it follows the proper manufacturing standards and has the right certifications. From the Goodman’s about page:

Select Goodman brand manufacturing facilities are ISO 9001-certified, an independent standard accepted worldwide as the benchmark for quality manufacturing and management processes, and ISO 14001-certified, an international environmental certification.

Goodman air conditioning systems utilize the R-410A refrigerant which is known to be an environmentally-friendly solution. This particular refrigerant is chlorine-free and formulated to not cause significant damage to the ozone layer.

Also, some of the best central air conditioners by Goodman come with a two-stage scroll compressor which allowed them to incorporate less moving parts which translate to better efficiency.

As of this writing, the most powerful unit offered by Goodman is the GSXC18 which features up to 19 SEER (Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio) performance. While that looks good on paper, it simply pales in comparison to other brands like Amana and Trane that offer units that feature a rating of 22 to 26 SEER.

Goodman units have an average SEER performance rating of around 15.3. Again, this average just doesn’t measure up with other leading brands. However, it is still higher than the minimum federal standard of 13 SEER, so there’s that.

With such a low average SEER rating, it’s not surprising that Goodman’s AC units tend to be less expensive when compared to other brands. A 16 to 19 SEER rating should be sufficient for residential use and economical needs but if you are looking for a unit with a
higher SEER rating, you will want to check out brands like Trane, Amana, and Lennox.

Unlike other manufacturers like Lennox and Trane, Goodman doesn’t sell directly to dealers. Instead, the units go to a middleman called the distributor.

The distributor is free to choose which dealers to do business with. For the intent of higher sales revenue, many not so desirable distributors choose to sell AC units to unqualified dealers which can lead to issues like improper installation. This is one of the main reasons why Goodman received several negative feedback from consumers.

While the Goodman AC units are fairly reliable, it’s important that you find a reliable contractor. As a rule of thumb, only purchase units from dealers that are authorized as GoodCare Dealers or A-Plus Dealers. These labels are only provided if the dealer has attended Goodman’s correspondence course every 6 months.

 Best Goodman Air Conditioner Units

So which units you should buy from Goodman? Here’s a couple of the best options for you:

As of this writing, the most advanced unit by Goodman is the DSXC18 air conditioner. It is a two-stage scroll compressor and features a two-speed ECM condenser fan motor.

One of the most notable features of the unit is the integration of the ComfortBridge technology. Basically, it’s a technology that features a smart home algorithm that gathers HVAC system performance data and uses it to automatically make adjustments for the best energy efficiency.

It also comes with a high-density foam compressor sound blanket which helps minimize noise and make sure you don’t annoy the neighbors. The cabinet is made from heavy-gauge galvanized steel and louvered coil guards. So, it’s a fairly durable model as well.

If you are looking for the best that Goodman has to offer and you are planning to use it in a residential home, then this 18-19 SEER AC unit should be more than enough for your needs.

Goodman 3 Ton 16 SEER AC R-410a with Upflow/Downflow Coil 14" wide...
  • Fully charged for 15 feet of tubing length
  • Contractor with lug connection
  • Ground lug connection

The Goodman 3 Ton 16 SEER Air Conditioner R-410a GSX160361 is a good unit to consider if you want an AC with a little bit of oomph but comes at a great price.

The unit has a rating of 16 SEER which is not the most efficient out there but it’s still way above the standard required by the federal government. Like our previous recommendation, the model features the ComfortNet Compatibility which is great.

Like most Goodman models, the GSX160361 uses the environmentally friendly refrigerant R-410A.

There’s one thing that you have to keep in mind about this unit. If you want to achieve the 16 SEER efficiency of this AC, Goodman recommends that you also install an evaporator coil, furnace, variable speed air handler, or variable speed modular blower and thermostatic expansion valve (TXV). It’s not required but it can improve your efficiency by 7 to 8 percent.

 Goodman Reviews and Feedback

So what do the consumers and reviewers think about the Goodman brand? Here are some reviews that we have compiled for your perusal:

Goodman central AC units are energy-efficient products that can save you money over older generations of air conditioners. However, they're not quite as impressively efficient as other brands’ units. They're durable and efficient, with environmentally friendly R-410A refrigerant and an impressive warranty to provide you with a comfortable indoor environment for many summers to come. - John Carlsen

In April 2016 we had Goodman Central ac condenser installed, Model # gsx160301 and a cased coil installed Model # capt3131c4. We've had no problems what so ever. The outside condenser is quiet. We've saved on our electricity bill. Installation is important. From our experience I recommend Goodman. - Jeffrey Oehrlein

On the other hand, there were some rather scathing reviews as well:

Air compressor seized after two summers of full use. This unit is 3 years old. I have a 10-year warranty on the part but not on labor. I am being told my cost will be 1500.00 for 8 hours labor and the Freon. Blairco in Vancouver, Washington put this unit in. I am trying to negotiate this cost down. It's doubled since last week. Do not buy a Goodman AC unit! - Kimra Holmes

Do not purchase Goodman products. Had a brand new 14 seer unit (inside and outside) installed in January 2018. This past weekend it stopped cooling and the outside unit froze up. The technician found a leak in the coils in the indoor unit. Parts are covered under warranty so that's something. But the almost $1000 in freon we've had to shell out in the last few days because of the leak in the coil is not covered. - Melissa M.

 What We Think

Goodman 3 Ton 16 SEER AC R-410a with Upflow/Downflow Coil 14' wide...

image via Amazon

From what we have seen, the Goodman air conditioner product line is a solid one.

I mean, they’re not exactly the most popular brand out there and they don’t make the most powerful ACs in the market. However, I have to say that they do provide quality and reliable units. If you are in the market for the most advanced units with the highest SEER ratings, you will probably be disappointed with what the brand has to offer.

However, if you need a solid and reliable AC system that won’t break the bank, it’s highly recommended that you check out what Goodman has to offer.

Kenmore Air Conditioner Review: What Makes It Unique

When browsing aircon brands, you will likely come across the name “Kenmore.” The company has been around since 1913, initially manufacturing sewing machines. Over the years, they branched out and produced more and more appliances. Kenmore now delivers various types of air conditioner units, including:

When looking through different products, you’ll likely find yourself wondering how Kenmore air conditioners stack up against other aircon brands. Fortunately, we’ve taken
the time to review Kenmore air conditioners. Below, you’ll find a brief breakdown and review of the various Kenmore air conditioners available for sale today so that you can make an informed buying decision.

Conditioners and How Do They Work?

With multiple product-types available, Kenmore air conditioners work to keep you cool on even the hottest of days. The company offers three different wall air units, 18 different window air conditioners, and three different portable air conditioners. With so many options available, you should have no problem the unit that is best suited for your home or office. When writing this review, we tried to detail one product from each of the four categories. Otherwise, trying to keep track of 20 different units would have grown overwhelming quickly! However, we found that the central air conditioning units varied significantly and we could not provide much of a review. But, by detailing three products, we provided you with a breakdown of this aircon brand.

The Kenmore Window Air Conditioner features 12,000 BTUs and runs on 115V of electricity. The company says that it is best for rooms around 550 square feet. The unit comes with electronic controls, including three cooling speeds and three fan speeds. The product also features eight-way air direction control. The unit measures 19” x 14.5” x 21.5” and weighs 70 pounds. The Kenmore Portable Air Conditioner features 10,000 BTUs. The company says that this model is ideal for rooms of up to 450 square feet. Customers can control the unit electronically, with settings such as “Fan Mode” and “Swing Mode.” Fan Mode allows users to circulate air without cooling it, while Swing Mode cools a room quickly. The product measures 16.5” x 28.5” x 14” and weighs about 60 pounds.

Lastly, the Kenmore Thru-the-Wall Air Conditioner features 12,000 BTUs and runs on 230V of electricity. The company says it is best for rooms of roughly 550 square feet. This unit features four-way air direction control, along with three cooling speeds and fan speeds. This air conditioner measures 20.5” x 14.5” x 24” and weighs around 75 pounds. We also found that pretty much every Kenmore unit came with remote control. This gave them the ability to control their air conditioning unit without having to get up from their seat. The remote allows users to turn the machine on and off, as well as adjust the fan speed and temperature settings. Unfortunately, the remotes don’t feature illumination, so operating them at night could be challenging.

What Makes Kenmore Air Conditioner

Conditioners Unique?

One of the unique features we’ve seen on new Kenmore air conditioners is the fact that they are compatible with Amazon’s Alexa. After connecting the unit to your Alexa account, the smart home assistant could perform tasks such as turning your equipment on and off or setting a particular temperature in the room. Furthermore, Kenmore appears to have tried to branch into the world of smart home technology by offering a mobile application. Users can control their unit through the Kenmore Smart AC App on their tablet or phone. This allows them to not only control the air conditioner from any room but practically anywhere in the world.

For instance, while on your drive home from work, you can turn your air conditioning unit on before you get in the car so that your home is cold by the time you get home. This can help keep your energy costs down significantly since the air conditioning unit won’t run throughout the day. With complete control at the palm of your hand, you end up cutting down on unnecessary costs.  It’s worth noting that not all Kenmore air conditioners are compatible with these features. If these are something in which you may be interested, be sure to do your research beforehand and pay close attention to the product specifications. If you choose to purchase through Sears directly, consider asking a certified technician for assistance before making your selection.

Lastly, Kenmore products are ENERGY STAR certified, which can also help you save money. The units also come with “Sleep” and “Energy Saver” modes. Customers will likely find that taking advantage of these two modes will help them cut costs even further. It’s clear that Kenmore has made energy efficiency a priority, which many customers should find beneficial.

  • Connect Now: Control and monitor on the go with Kenmore Smart AC App on your phone or tablet
  • 10,000 BTU cools spaces up to 450 sq. ft. Cord Length : 6 feet. Filter Material : Polypropylene mesh
  • ENERGY STAR Certified. Recommended room size: 300 - 500 square feet

The Window Air Conditioner unit costs a bit less than $$$ on the Sears website. The Portable Air Conditioner unit costs just under $$$. The Thru-the-Wall unit costs around $$$. Sears does not offer to price on the Central Air Conditioner units. Additionally, customers can lease the products from Sears without purchasing the item. The company does not require the buyer’s credit information to do so. These prices are comparable to what we found on third-party websites, such as Amazon. For instance, a Smart Air Conditioner that is compatible with Alexa is available on the Amazon website for a bit less than $$$. So, if the selling point is essential to you, we recommend browsing third-party sites to see if you can secure a better deal than you could through Sears.

Kenmore’s warranty is also competitive, especially when compared to other aircon brands. The company says that the entire appliance carries a one-year manufacturer’s guarantee against material and workmanship. This means that if your device is defective within the first year, they will repair it for free. Additionally, if broken beyond repair, the company will replace the entire unit for free. Kenmore also specifies that the sealed refrigerant system is also covered under warranty, although the company will protect against this for five years. In this case, the buyer is responsible for paying the cost of labor. It is unclear whether either Kenmore warranty applies to those air conditioners purchased from third-party vendors, such as Amazon.

When customers purchase directly from the Kenmore website, they can also buy a protection plan for their unit. A protection plan offers many perks that a standard warranty does not. For instance, a protection plan grants the buyer access to unlimited coverage with no deduction and fees. It also covers against repair due to normal wear and tear, as well as a replacement guarantee. It appears that for most products, a three-year protection plan costs about $$$, while a five-year protection plan costs a little less than $$$. If you plan to use your air conditioning unit frequently, you may find it in your best interest to purchase a protection plan. A protection plan is an investment in your device that could increase its longevity significantly.

Public Perception

Image via Amazon

When looking at various Kenmore air conditioners on the Sears website, the results were a bit mixed but tended to rank above-average. For instance, the Window Air Conditioner had a four-star rating with more than 35 reviews. The Portable Air Conditioner had a five-star rating, although only one customer had taken the time to review the product. The Thru-the-Wall unit had a 3.5-star rating with ten reviews. Many customers seemed to agree that their air conditioning unit did an excellent job of keeping their room cool. Some of the reasonings for poor ratings were because of other issues. For instance, one reviewer said that they work at night so they must sleep during the day and that the unit allowed it too much light for them to sleep comfortably.

Other reviewers seemed to take issue with Sears. They indicated that they did not have a pleasant experience working with Sears in the past and that they were skeptical to buy from them again. Reviewers found it unfortunate that the only way they could purchase a Kenmore product through an authorized dealer was to go through Sears. In summary, customers seemed to be more than satisfied with their air conditioning units. What we gathered when reading customer reviews was that if you are looking for a device that will perform well and keep your home or office cool, Kenmore is an aircon brand that you can trust. We value performance more than anything, so reading these reviews comforted our team.

How it Compares

LG 8,000 BTU 115V Window-Mounted Air Conditioner with Remote Control,...
  • LOW NOISE PERFORMANCE: Operates at sound levels as low as 53dB (in low mode) eliminating unnecessary noise
  • ENERGY STAR CERTIFIED: This air conditioner has met the high standards of the energy star program using energy-efficient...
  • MULTIPLE FAN SPEEDS: 3 cooling and fan speeds with auto cool allow you to customize your cooling.

When it comes to choosing an air conditioner, there are many options from which you can choose. One of the most popular air conditioners from the past year was the LG LW8016ER. This product costs around $$$, making it a much cheaper option than some of the Kenmore air conditioners. The unit produces 8,000 BTUs and runs on 115V of electricity. It measures 19.6” x 19.4” x 12.4.” Similar to Kenmore models, the LG unit has three cooling speeds and three fan speeds. One of the unique features of the LG air conditioner is the fact that it dehumidifies as well. Customers will no longer have to purchase both an air conditioning unit and a dehumidifier since this unit does both. LG states that the air conditioner can remove an incredible 2.2 pints her hour, which is practically industrial-grade.

Although the LG model is ENERGY STAR efficient, it does not have nearly the same features as some of the Kenmore models. For instance, the LG model does not have options such as Sleep Mode. We also did not find smartphone capabilities for the LG product, which means you must be present to turn the unit on and off.

What We Think

When it comes to aircon brands, Kenmore is a name that we can trust. The company has produced air conditioners for years, consistently delivering quality products. When conducting our reviews, we found this still to be the case. Although we were initially off-put by some of the prices of the units, we quickly realized that this was an investment that could save money in the long run. That’s because Kenmore has done an excellent job with their energy-saving technology. The Alexa feature as a nice touch on some of the units that we reviewed, but what stood out to us most was the smartphone app. The app made it possible for users to control their unit from anywhere. For those with portable AC units who can’t use something like a Nest thermostat, this was the next best thing.

It was unclear to us whether warranties were still intact if a customer decided to purchase their air conditioning unit from a third-party seller such as Amazon. For some customers, the warranty and protection plan may not be a significant deal. However, Kenmore offers a pretty thorough warranty plan and an even better protection plan. Customers may want to look into making this investment. In summary, if you are looking for an aircon brand that you can trust, Kenmore is an excellent choice. With multiple products available, we’re confident that you can find the unit best suited for your home or office. While there may be cheaper units available, “you get what you pay for.” A Kenmore purchase is an investment in a quality product that could last for years.

Coupons and Deals

If you need an air conditioning unit, you can contact Sears Home Services for a free consultation. During this consultation, a Sears agent will work to determine the proper Kenmore air conditioner for your home by performing a load calculation estimate. The free estimate will save you money in the long run, as it will prevent you from purchasing system that is too large or too small for your needs.

When we were browsing aircon brands on the Sears website, a pop-up advertisement for a coupon also appeared. At the time of us writing this review, Sears was offering $ any purchase of $$ or more, or $$ any order of $$$ or more. Customers had to enter their email address to receive access to the deals. Be mindful of potential sales when purchasing from Sears directly.

5,000 BTU mini-compact air conditioner, Mechanical rotary controls, Low power start-up, Quiet operation, Energy Efficiency Ratio (EER): 11.1

The Frigidaire 5,000 BTU Window-Mounted Mini-Compact Air Conditioner is a good unit to consider if you want window-mounted model.

This is an awesome cooling machine that will keep you nice and cool against the junglelike humidity and heat at night. This is a standard window-mounted unit with a no-nonsense approach. This air conditioner is a breeze to install as it’s quite simple and small. Although I was able to install it on my own, it’s still fairly heavy.

There are standard modes that you can use like the fan setting which is nice if you don’t want to jack up your electricity bill. What I do is simply pre-cool the room hours before bed, then I just switch the setting to fan mode as I go to bed. Works pretty well and keeps me comfortably cool at night, even during the worst hot nights.

It’s not exactly the best-looking AC unit out there, but most window air conditioners are not known for their sleek look. Works pretty well and is quite cheap too.

If you want the most powerful air conditioner that can cool your entire home, look no further than the Amana ASX16 16 SEER Air Conditioner.

With the cooling capacity of 23,600 – 53,000 BTU, this unit is a truly a cooling beast. From commercial to resident spaces, this central air unit should have no problem keeping things cool. However, don’t think that this unit is a power-hungry monster because it’s quite the opposite.

The ASX16 features a 16 SEER (Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio) energy-efficiency performance which is massive considering that the federal standard is only 13 SEER. Basically, the higher the SEER, the more efficient the unit is. And at 16 SEER, the ASX16 is one of the most efficient models available.

The unit is equipped with a compressor sound-reduction cover made of high-density foam and a specially designed sound-control top. This equates to an unbelievably quiet operation despite its power. This is a high-end choice for sure but it’s definitely worth the money.

This 14,000 BTU unit can effectively cool a 500 square foot area and can turn that damp, stuffy air into a comfortable air in no time. The refrigerant used for this model is R410a which is notably a non ozone-depleting solution. So you don’t have to be concerned if you’re doing the environment harm by using this portable AC.

There are plenty of settings to play around with which include Auto, Cool, Dehumidify, Heat, and Fan. It’s also very easy to operate with its Self-Evaporative System. Basically, the unit automatically exhausts most or all condensate under average ambient conditions. There’s also the standard 24 hour programmable timer which works as intended.

On the downside, the unit can be noisy but still on the manageable levels. It’s another solid portable AC unit that offers great performance.

Let’s start with the 12,000 BTU cooling capacity which is far more powerful than most window-mounted models on the market. Generally, window units are used for smaller rooms but that’s because they aren’t that powerful. Well, you can put a window unit for a larger room but you are just going to waste money on electric bills.

This LG air conditioner can cool a room with 350-650 sq. ft. area. That’s a lot of coverage, considering that most window types can only cover up to 150-200 sq. ft.

Reviews: Bryant Air Conditioner; Is This High-End Brand Worth It?

When it comes to buying an air conditioner unit, you’ll be happy to know that there are plenty of options available.

However, we all know that shopping for an AC unit is easier said than done.

There’s a massive variety of air conditioners in the market across many different types, models, and brands.

With that said, it’s a good idea to narrow down your choices by selecting a type of AC, then go with a certain brand.

If you are in the market for a good central air conditioning unit, you might want to take a look at what the brand Bryant has to offer.

For today’s article, we’re going to highlight the Bryant brand of central air conditioners. We’re going to talk a bit about the company, discuss what we liked and didn’t like, provide some recommendations from the Bryant air conditioner line, then highlight a couple of consumer reviews.

About the Bryant Brand

air conditioners

Bryant is actually a brand that is owned by United Technologies Corporation (UTC), which coincidentally also owns Carrier. With that said, almost 95% of the AC models are identical between Carrier and Bryant.

From Bryant’s About Page:

Value for homeowners has always been a driving force behind Bryant designs and technology. From the development of the 80% efficiency boiler to adapting to the ever-changing market by offering smart technology and more, Bryant has a history of being committed to providing a wide range of products that meet homeowner needs and exceed expectations.

Bryant is not just a manufacturer of AC units but is more of a comprehensive HVAC brand. So, if you prefer, you may also install an AC, gas furnace, thermostat and indoor air quality equipment from the Bryant brand and you’ll have an interlinked system. This helps you to maximize performance and energy efficiency.

Bryant central AC units are a great option if you are looking for a model that features better-than-average efficiency and ozone-safe refrigerant. Most, if not all, of Bryant’s air conditioner models have met the guidelines for an Energy Star certification.

Reviewing the Bryant Air Conditioner Units

air conditioners

Bryant is known for their high-quality and energy efficient central air conditioners. For this review, we’ll talk about what we love and didn’t love about this AC brand.

What We Liked About Bryant

1. Reputable Name

Bryant may not be popular among most people, but it’s actually a rather reputable name in the HVAC industry.

Again, this company is also owned by UTC which also owns other well-known brands like Carrier, Payne and Heil. They have been around in the business developing and delivering reliable products which are 100% tested before they even leave the factory.

This is why many HVAC contractors and dealers tend to gravitate towards Bryant for providing the best AC units for their clients. While the company does offer high-quality products and solutions, they can all be availed at a much reasonable price.

What we have here is a company with a solid reputation that also provides high-quality and reliable products. There have been some bad reviews about Bryant, but we found out that they’re mainly due to bad installations.

2. Good Range of Products

As mentioned, Bryant only offers central air conditioners, so if you’re looking for window-mounted or portable units, then you should look elsewhere. However, if you’re looking for a range of AC units that can provide cool comfort for your whole house, you should check out what Bryant has to offer.

Fortunately, Bryant offers a good range of air conditioning units.

There are actually three main categories of Bryant air conditioners: Evolution, Preferred, and Legacy.

This is the high-end offering of Bryant which includes variable-speed as well as 1- and 2-stage units. This line features the most efficient model which is 21 SEER and can be remotely operated with the Evolution Connex control. Below is the complete list of AC units from the Evolution line:

This series of ACs s are a mix of single-stage and two-stage models which usually run on low most of the time. However, when it’s time to cool your home, they quickly shift to high capacity cooling. This series is designed to operate consistently and quietly with SEER ratings up to 17 SEER.

Before you go for this series, make sure that it’s eligible for installation in your area. This is because some of the models have not met the minimum efficiency standards in areas like the Southeast or Southwest regions. Below is the complete list of units from the Preferred series:

This is Bryant’s entry-level series with affordable units that have single-stage compressors. Although they are not that powerful, they can still provide a fairly decent cost-efficient cooling for your home. The most efficient unit can deliver up to 16.5 SEER rating.

Again, some Legacy models might not be suitable in some regions because they don’t meet the minimum efficiency standards. So, it’s always best to do your research before dealing with a Legacy dealer. Here’s the complete list of units from the Legacy series:

3. Multiple-Stage Cooling

Personally, I like Bryant because of their single and multiple stage cooling units.

I prefer multi-stage cooling units instead of single-stage ones because it helps you save more in the long run. Multi-stage systems are simply more efficient because the user can easily regulate the level at which the AC operates and make it work at different power levels.

In addition, achieving the right indoor humidity is much easier with a double-stage cooling unit.

Unfortunately, not all Bryant models that multi-stage cooling. Most Evolution units are multi-stage, the Preferred series only has one multi-stage, and none for the Legacy series. As you might have guessed, the presence of multi-stage cooling means more expensive price as well. However, it’s a good investment if you’re looking to lower your operation costs.

What We Didn’t Like About Bryant

aircons in line

1. Expensive

Although many of Bryant’s ACs have good quality and reliability, most of their products are quite expensive. While I don’t mind spending good money on higher-end models, I still find it hard to pay around $1,700 and that’s just for one of their Legacy models. Needless to say, if you want a Preferred or Evolution unit, be prepared to pay more or less $2,000.

2. Hard to Find Dealers

Since Carrier and Bryant’s models are very identical, UTC won’t allow Bryant products to be sold anywhere near a Carrier dealer. I suspect that works the other way around as well.

Because of this, it can be difficult to find a Bryant contractor. Most Bryant ACs can only be bought through the company’s network of certified dealers. So, finding out the price for the models can be tedious since you need to call or invite a Bryant sales representative to your home.

3. Warranty

Bryant’s warranty policy can be downright baffling, if not frustrating.

If you’re going to get an Evolution or Preferred unit, you’ll have the 10-year warranty which is standard for many companies. However, if you choose to get a Legacy model, be prepared to settle for the 5-year warranty. Five years warranty is simply not enough especially when air conditioners have an average lifespan of 10 to 15 years.

1. Evolution 2-Stage Air Conditioner Model 180B

The Evolution 2-Stage Air Conditioner Model 180B is Bryant’s most efficient unit and is rated at 21 SEER and up to 15 EER efficiency. This is a 2-stage operation AC which means that comfort cycles are more consistent for better savings and comfort.

It also acts as an effective summer dehumidifier and features a quiet operation as low as 66 dB (about as quiet as a vacuum). It’s also Wi-Fi compatible so you can remotely program and control the unit from anywhere in your home.

It makes use of environmentally-sound Puron refrigerant and comes with a 10-year parts limited warranty upon registration.

2. Evolution Variable-Speed Air Conditioner Model 189BNV

The Evolution Variable-Speed Air Conditioner Model 189BNV is an amazing variable-speed unit that features a 19 SEER rating and up to 13 EER rating efficiency. Due to the variable speed, the unit is even more flexible with its operation, giving you better savings and a more customized cooling comfort.

It utilizes the Evolution Connex control for a reliable dehumidification that works wonders for zoned systems. It is also one of the quietest Bryant ACs available at 56 dB.

Bryant Reviews and Feedback

Like most AC brands, Bryant has its fair share of satisfied and pissed customers. Below are some of the positive feedback we’ve found regarding the brand:

If you want a quiet central air conditioning unit with an array of energy-saving features, Bryant central air conditioners are a decent option. Bryant features units with a specialized louvered coil guard, better-than-average energy efficiency and ozone-safe refrigerant. - John Carlsen

We had a 16-year mid-level furnace and A/C. The A-coil finally got a hole in it and leaked freon, our first major problem. We replaced the entire system with the Evolution and have already noticed a big difference in the energy bill - for our good. The furnace never needed a service call but we decided to replace both at once. I am really looking forward to seeing how my heating bill will be affected. - S. Woods

On the other hand, there’s no shortage of downright critical reviews about the brand. Most of which involve the limited warranty and poor customer service:

My Evolution four-ton unit is almost four years old. The air compressor died. The parts are covered but labor and Puron cost $1,400. My brother has the same unit and his compressor also failed. Bryant knows they have sold junk and don' t care. I would never by another Bryant product, and advise you to do the same. - M. Leonard

Installed my Bryant system in 2007, 5 years later my compressor and wire harness must be replaced. The cost to me for parts and labor is $3,095.81. My dealer serviced this unit every year and told me it was fine, and then out of nowhere, it burnt up. While the compressor is still under warranty, my dealer has no explanation why this happened and that's the best they can do. Do not buy this Bryant a/c product. I only use it 4 months out
of a year!!! - J. Ryan

What We Think

Based on the tests and research, the Bryant air conditioner line has performed well.

Keep in mind that this is a higher-end brand which means that you are unlikely to find a cheap AC from them.

However, the premium price tag is quite justified because they make air conditioning units that have high reliability and above average efficiency.

With the right care and maintenance, a Bryant AC will last you a long while.

Reviews: GE Air Conditioner – Is this Brand Recognition Enough?

Want to stay cool this summer? The best way to do it is to install a brand spanking new air conditioner in your home.

However, there’s no shortage of options when it comes to AC units. There are just so many types, models, and brands to choose from. While this is generally a good thing because more options, the better, such vast choices can also lead to choice paralysis.

If you are having trouble with choosing the best air conditioner for your home, perhaps you should start with the brand – a reputable one at that.

When it comes to air conditioners, one of the most popular names in the industry is General Electric or GE. For this article, we discuss whether GE air conditioner units are worth your time and money. Then, we will highlight some of the best models that GE has to offer. And lastly, provide actual reviews and feedback from consumers about the brand.

 About the GE Brand

visit site: General Electric

General Electric or GE is a brand that needs no introduction. The company is pretty much a household name when it comes to American electric appliances. Well, it’s a company that was founded back on April 15, 1892, and one of its founders is none other than Thomas Edison.

However, as we all know, the company has branched out to several industries. As of 2018, the company has segments that include aviation, healthcare, power, renewable energy, digital, additive manufacturing, venture capital and finance, lighting, transportation, and oil and gas.

When it comes to air conditioners, most of GE’s offerings are window-mounted models. The company also offers a few portable units as well.

GE is a very reputable and popular brand among consumers. Their products are synonymous with quality and reliability. However, does this apply to their line of air conditioning units? For this section, we talk about the things we liked and didn’t like about GE air conditioners.

 Best GE Air Conditioner Models

For this section, we highlight the best AC models that GE has to offer.

GE AEM08LX [Fits Windows: 24" to 38" W x 13-1/2" H MIN.] Window Air...
  • MEDIUM ROOM 250-350 SQ. FT. | 15' x 20'
  • Fits Windows: 24" to 38" W x 13-1/2" H MIN.
  • 5,200 BTU, 12.1 CEER, 115 Volts
  • Electronic digital thermostat and remote control
  • 3 cooling / 3 fan speeds.         ENERGY STAR® qualified
  • EZ Mount window installation kit included

The GE AEM08LX 19" Window Air Conditioner is perhaps my favorite unit from GE’s offering.

The AEM08LX is a solidly constructed, high-functioning AC that can cool a space of up to 260 square feet. This is a mid-range window-mounted AC that features great energy efficiency. It has an Energy Efficiency Ratio (EER) rating of 12.4 which is one of the highest among GE models.

The 5,200 BTU air conditioner is not the most powerful out there but can still comfortably cool a medium-sized space. The max airflow is a decent 145 cubic feet per minute but it does a great job of circulating air, thanks to its four-way directional louvers.

The relatively compact and lighter profile makes it easier to install. It comes with a window kit which can fit in most windows. However, it does lack some convenience features like a sleep mode or an auto-restart feature.

  • Electronic digital thermostat and remote control
  • 3 cooling / 3 fan only speeds
  • ENERGY STAR® qualified
  • EZ Mount window installation kit included
  • Fixed chassis

If you want something that packs more power, the GE AHM08LW Energy Star Qualified Window Air Conditioner is a good option.

This 10,200 BTU in-wall AC unit can comfortably cool a room up to 450 square feet. Plus, the max airflow of 270 cubic feet per minute will help you feel cooler in just a fair bit. There are three main fan speeds, and you can simply run the fan by itself after cooling the air.

The unit also act as a dehumidifier and it works great. This AC can remove up to 2.7 pints of moisture per hour which is a blessing if you’re living in a particularly humid area. Unfortunately, this doesn’t have a built-in dehumidifying mode, so you still need to run the unit in cooling mode to eradicate the moisture in the air.

Although it’s a fairly powerful cooling unit, it still provides an above average Energy Efficiency Ratio (EER) of 10.7 and it also carries the Energy Star qualification.

So, what do people think about GE air conditioners? Well, it seems that consumers have a polarizing opinion about this popular brand’s AC units.

Here are some of the positive reviews we’ve found:

It is a quality, affordable product that I would recommend to friend and family. I don't worry about it randomly breaking and having to replace it. I have peace of mind and that is a great feeling. The performance has been superior as I would expect from GE. They do not disappoint when it comes to performance and quality. My electric bill has not been excessive and my apartment remains perfectly cool. - Jess

The product that I have is very Energy efficient and extremely reliable. The product is very Low maintenance and extremely easy to use. We are very happy with our product and experience. This product works great and is very reliable. We never had to fix any part and it cools down the house greatly. We will and have recommended this product to friends and family. - Casandra

On the flip side, there are also several scathing reviews that cite unreliable product quality and poor customer service:

An AC unit that was purchased less than 3 months ago stopped blowing cold air. A repair order was called in (Wed), a Triage Tech (not a repair person) came in (Thurs), ordered the part and stated the part was on back order until November. I was told I would receive an email and a call from the repair person to follow up on the next step. No call or email received. - Office of Raleigh

I would NEVER recommend anyone call GE Appliance Repair unless you would like to pay more for a simple service than a new appliance (which I'd not recommend you purchase a GE Appliance due to their defective products and lack of reasonable customer care to address them). I should have paid attention to prior reviews, as they have an overall 1-STAR rating. - Jenn

 What We Think

Based on our research, tests, and personal experiences, GE has put out air conditioners that are solidly built and provide reliable performance. The company has put so much effort into making their air conditioners more energy efficient and it certainly paid off.

However, for such a popular brand, the variety of products is just poor. The units themselves leave a lot to be desired as far as designs go.

Despite that, it’s tough not to recommend the GE brand. If you want a cooling system that works and will last you a long while, it’s hard to go wrong with a GE air conditioner.

LG 12,000 BTU 115V Window-Mounted Air Conditioner with Remote Control,...

image via Amazon

As the name suggests, a window air conditioner is a type of AC that is mounted in a window. Window air conditioners are great if you are living in a small apartment that doesn’t have central heating or simply want to augment the existing AC system in your house, a window air conditioner is one of the best options available.

And don’t worry, even though these are the best window air conditioners, you’ll be surprised to find that the best window air conditioner might not be as expensive as you think. So what advantages does a window air conditioner have?

  • Low Cost

Most window air conditioners don’t cost much to purchase, with some costing as little as $150.00. Considering that they will provide you with a cooling (and heating) solution for years to come, this is really a great bargain.

  • Don't Take Up Space

Especially if space is limited in your home, you’ll find a window air conditioner to be a great option to getting your home cool. This is because window air conditioners don’t take up valuable floor space as they are mounted in the window.

  • Versatile

Because they can fit in small spaces, window air conditioners are versatile. You can use them in an office, dorm room, bedroom, and basically any space that has a window.

  • Easy to Install

One of the biggest advantages of getting a window air conditioner is that this type of AC is very easy to install. This means you can easily install it yourself if you can, but if you can’t installation won’t cost you that much.

  • Energy Efficient

This is a great benefit that everyone will definitely appreciate, the fact that most window air conditioners have excellent Energy Efficiency Ratios (EER). This means they are relatively cheap to run, helping you save on energy bills.

  • Affect the View

One of the biggest disadvantages of window air conditioners is that they block all or part of the view through the window in which they have been fitted. In essence, once you install a window air conditioner, that window stops functioning.

  • Sometimes Make Your Room Vilnerable

Especially if the window is easily accessible from the outside, installing a window air conditioner makes that window easier to open from the outside.

  • Overall Efficiency Can Be Lower Than Other Air Conditioning

The overall EER rating of window air conditioners is generally less than other types of air conditioners. This is why when you are looking for the best window air conditioner, you need to check the Energy Efficiency Ratio and make sure that your unit of choicer is Energy Star certified.

Now that you have a good understanding of window AC units, let’s get you the best window air conditioner to help you chill your house.

The Keystone KSTAW05B is a compact window air conditioner with 5,000 BTU of cooling power. That may not be a lot for a large room, but for a small 150 square foot room, this is more than enough to get your room icy cold in a short space of time. And because of its compact nature, it’s very easy to install – even if you choose to do so yourself.

What makes this tiny titan feature in our best window air conditioner is the fact that this AC unit has a low power consumption, thanks to its compact nature and EER rating of 11.2. The Keystone KSTAW05B is Energy Star certified, so its efficiency claims are not just an issue of the manufacturer blowing hot air.

But don’t let the tiny frame of this AC unit fool you as it is feature rich – more than other models bigger than it. some of the features include a temperature sensing remote control, programmable timer, an auto mode, sleep mode, and even a dehumidifier mode to mention just but a few. But of course, being a budget window air conditioner, especially of its size, it does have its shortcomings. One of them is the low airflow (129 CFM) which makes it particularly suitable for small rooms.

But despite it being a budget window air conditioner, the Keystone KSTAW05B has a tempting 5-year warranty on the compressor that is 4 years longer than warranties on similarly priced and categorized air conditioners.

Friedrich 8000 BTU - Energy Star CP08G10B Chill Series Room Air...
  • POWERFUL - 8,000 BTUs of cooling power that will cool rooms up to 350 sq. ft
  • ULTRA QUIET OPERATION - Window ac designed to cut operation noise to a minimum
  • CONTINUOUS AUTO AIR SWEEP LOUVERS - Automatically oscillate louvers left and right during cooling

The Friedrich CP08G10B Chill is a great window air conditioner that will particularly serve large rooms well with its 8000 BTUs of power. Rated to cool rooms that measure 250 square feet this AC unit does so easily and efficiently thanks to its multi-directional louver that allows it to cool multiple spots in the room at the same time.

Installation is also easy, but this being a heavy air conditioner (60 pounds heavy), you will probably need a helping hand in order to do so.

Some of the features you can look forward to include a built-in timer, an energy saver mode, and an auto restart mode that turns the AC settings back to your preferred settings when power goes off and then comes back on. This saves you the hassle of fiddling with the settings again.

Being on this list of best window air conditioner, the Friedrich Chill CP08G10B is Energy Star certified, meaning it runs efficiently, thereby helping you to save on your utility bills. And because it comes with a 5-year warranty on the compressor, you can have peace of mind that if anything goes wrong in those 5-years, you are sufficiently covered.

GE AEM05LX 19" Window Air Conditioner with 5200 Cooling BTU, Energy...
  • Volts:115 Volts
  • Cooling Capacity (BTU): 5200
  • Number of Cooling Speeds: 3

If you are looking to cool a medium-sized room (up to 260 square feet), the GE AEM05LX could be the best window air conditioner you are looking for. Although it may not be the most powerful AC unit in its category, it could be the most energy efficient of them all. This means this unit really puts its 5200 BTU of power to really good use as it manages to score a healthy 12.4 energy efficiency ratio.

Although it is well-designed and does a great job of cooling down a room, this window AC unit has a few flaws, particularly the fact that it’s lacking in the features department. The most prominent features that are lacking are a dehumidifier and an auto-restart function. The warranty is also a bit disappointing as it only covers labor, parts, and the compressor for one year.

But apart from those shortcomings, the GE AEM05LX is a pretty good window air conditioner that will not disappoint when it comes to keeping your room cool.

How Important are AC Filters?

You are likely aware of some of the more essential parts of aircon in a car, such as a compressor, fan, and chemical refrigerant. One of the products that cause frequent debates among experts is the AC filter. Is it necessary for you to have in your car? How often must you replace it? Below, we have the definitive guide to the question, “How important are AC filters?”

What is an AC Filter?

Filtrete 16x25x1, AC Furnace Air Filter, MPR 1000, Micro Allergen...
  • OUTPERFORMS FIBERGLASS, WASHABLE AND NON-ELECTROSTATIC 3-month pleated 1 in. home air filters for your furnace, air...
  • DESIGNED WITH EXCLUSIVE Filtrete Brand 3-in-1 technology from 3M to trap unwanted air particles while letting cleaner...
  • ATTRACTS AND CAPTURES particles such as lint, pollen, dust, pet dander, smoke and smog

An AC filter, otherwise known as a cabin air filter, is a part of the aircon system in your car. The feature is more recent and is only typically seen in later-model vehicles manufactured after 2000. According to Cars.com, the filter helps purify the air that comes into a car, catching pollen, dust, and other airborne materials. It can clean any air that comes into the car from a variety of sources, including the:

  • Heating System
  • Air Conditioning System
  • Ventilation System

Your manufacturer should provide you with a guideline as to when to replace parts of aircon, including the AC filter. A low-end estimate indicates that filters can last between 12,000 and 15,000 miles. However, as designs have evolved, some manufacturers install filters that can last up to 20,000 miles. The maintenance schedule in your owner’s manual should instruct you when to replace the filter.

It’s also worth noting that the location where you drive, and the frequency in which you do so, could have a significant impact on the longevity of your filter. For instance, those who operate in polluted urban areas will likely need to replace their filter more often than someone who lives in an area with better air quality. Drivers in dusty or sandy areas may need to replace their filter often too.

Is the AC Filter Important?

Filtrete 16x25x1, AC Furnace Air Filter, MPR 1000, Micro Allergen...

image via Amazon

Many people often wonder if the AC filter is a critical part of the aircon system. The belief is that if cars of the past did not need the screen, why would they need them in modern cars? Thanks to advanced research, we now know that failure to keep the AC filter clean could result in drivers and passengers inhaling dangerous smog and exhaust from other cars. So, yes, the AC filter is vital. An excellent analogy would be comparing the AC filter to the engine air filter. The engine air filter exists so that you can keep debris from entering your engine, where it could cause severe problems. The engine air filter allows your engine to “breathe” air that is pure. The AC filter does the same thing, except instead cleaning the air for the engine, it cleans it for you and other passengers in the cabin.

So, ask yourself this. Do you replace your engine air filter regularly? Odds are, the answer is yes. If so, then you should replace your AC filter regularly as well. And if you don’t change your engine filter regularly, then we are gravely worried about the status of your car! We recommend visiting your local mechanic as soon as possible. Tom Potter, a mechanic in Virginia, spoke with Angie’s List about AC filters. He said, “The cabin air filter is kind of out of sight, out of mind. If you tell someone that they need their cabin air filter changed, some say, ‘What is that?’ They think you’re talking about the engine air filter. I’ve seen people go 90,000 miles without changing it because they didn’t know they needed to.”

He continued to say that the filters can benefit those who suffer from allergies because they prevent pollen from entering the car. However, the AC filter is about more than just air quality. The screen can also play an integral role in your car’s air conditioning system. Phoenix-based mechanic Troy Roberts said, “When the air is dirty, the A/C will work harder, and the motor can burn up.” Failure to replace the filter could result in less air coming through your vents. Your system will then work harder to in an attempt to keep the car cool.

A dirty filter would also result in the air that does come through the vents being less cold than it would with a clean screen. Some users find that parking the car provides temporary relief from this, but as soon as they begin driving the problem starts again. This is because air passes through the AC filter to another part of your aircon system, the AC evaporator. The evaporator exists to cool the air, operating at freezing temperatures. The evaporator also prevents ice from building up within the aircon system. When air cannot flow through the filter, ice will begin to build, and your air conditioning system will no longer keep you cool.

When Should You Replace Your Filter?

Filtrete 16x25x1, AC Furnace Air Filter, MPR 1000, Micro Allergen...

image via Amazon

You should at least consider replacing your filter when your manufacturer tells you too. Be sure to check your owner’s manual for more information about the AC filter and other parts of the aircon system. Following your manufacturer’s recommendations is an excellent way to help keep your car healthy and ensure your aircon system functions properly. However, if you drive your car frequently or drive it in areas with poor air quality, you may need to replace your filter more often than recommended by your manufacturer. Fortunately, there are some warning signs for which you can be on the lookout that could potentially indicate a clogged filter. We described the first telltale sign, diminished cooling airflow, in the section above.

Additionally, another sign is a loud noise when the fans of your AC unit are blowing. You’ll likely notice this most whenever you turn the fans high. Another indication of a poor AC filter would be if you smelt a lot of bad odors in your car. While some bad odors are inevitable, if you find that you smell them more often or that the smell has grown more pungent, you may need a new filter. The best course of action, especially if you have not changed your AC filter in a while, is to visit your trusted local mechanic. A mechanic can evaluate the parts of your aircon system to determine the primary cause of the problem. They can also remove your AC filter to determine how dirty it is and if you’ll need to buy a replacement.

How to Replace the Filter?

Filtrete 16x25x1, AC Furnace Air Filter, MPR 1000, Micro Allergen...

image via Amazon

If you would prefer to replace your filter rather than go to a mechanic, there are a few steps you’ll first need to go through. First, and arguably most critical, you’ll need to pinpoint the filter’s location. The cabin air filter in most cars is behind the glove box. Many car owners find that they can reach the screen by releasing the fasteners to the glove box. If you are unsure about how to release your glove box or feel as though your cabin air filter is not there, you can consult your owner’s manual. The owner’s manual should give you explicit directions to describing how you can replace the equipment. If your filter is not behind the glove box, it will likely be under the dashboard or hood.

Once you’ve found your filter, you can evaluate whether it needs replacing and, if so, the model you need. Cabin AC filters are not the same, so it’s imperative that you find one best suited for your vehicle. If your screen is underneath the dashboard or hood, you can expect to pay a bit more than if it were behind the glove box. However, completing the process on your own should help save money. The filter can typically cost depending on which type you purchase. However, some mechanics will charge two to three times as much for labor. By replacing the filter on your own, you’re cutting out substantial labor costs, which will save you a significant amount of money in the long run. Spending time learning how to replace the filter could pay dividends in the future.

In regards to replacing the filter on your own, Potter said, “Some (filters) are quite a chore. Clips and pins that need to be taken off, and if you don’t know what
you’re doing, you can break it when you pull it out. But generally speaking, it’s an accessible part.” This demonstrates that while it may take some initial investigate work, finding the filter could eventually be worth your while.

We recommend that you check the air filter at least once per year. Also pay attention to your odometer, as driving more frequently could cause you to need to replace your filter sooner than anticipated. Perhaps set six-month reminders in your calendar. For both your health and the performance of your vehicle, it’s better that you are diligent about checking the filter than not.

Furthermore, if you were to take your car to the dealership, you should ask them to see the filter before they throw it away. We’re willing to bet that you’re shocked at what’s in the filter. You’ll see everything from twigs to pollen. Seeing the screen will give you a better idea of what a dirty filter looks like so that you can hold your mechanic accountable or replace your own in the future.

American Standard HVAC is a company that provides products and services to meet nearly all of your heating and cooling needs. The company offers a wide range of products, intended for both residential and commercial use. Whereas some aircon brands allow you to purchase their products from third-party sites, this is the not so with American Standard, as you must buy from them directly. Products include:

Customers must work with an approved American Standard dealer if they wish to purchase one of these products. The company says that they handpick local dealers “for their superior product knowledge and overall commitment to excellence.” To begin the process of purchasing American Standard equipment, you can reach out to a customer care dealer in your area. To find a customer care dealer, you can enter your zip code to find dealers in your area. The dealers are third-party HVAC specialists. So, you may see fix or six different companies in your community. After you’ve identified dealers in your area, you can call them, email them, or book a consultation online. American Standard makes it easier than some other aircon brands to schedule an appointment.

Once you contact a customer care dealer, you can set up a consultation at your home or place of business. Once there, the agent will determine which system is best for your property and recommend a few products that could meet your needs. Dealers will also explain proper system maintenance and answer any questions you have about your heating or cooling needs. On their website, American Standard takes the time to detail how the purchasing process works. They recommend that customers begin by considering their home environment, asking themselves whether their utility bills are too high or if they have rooms that are always too hot or too cold. From there, American Standard will work with customers to design a system that fits their home perfectly.

After contacting a dealer and going through the installation process, American Standard says that their job is not yet complete. The company continues to follow up with its customers to help ensure their satisfaction. American Standard says that they have a commitment to excellence and that their goal is to ensure each one of their customers is happy. The company provides yearly maintenance checkups. The company says that they choose to work with dealers who demonstrate a “proven commitment to excellence, product knowledge, and customer service.” American Standard also indicates that their dealers keep up with the latest technology so that your system is as comfortable, reliable, and efficient as possible.

What Makes American Standard HVAC Unique?

We found that one of the things that most sets American Standard apart is their commitment to clean air. The company website indicates that more than 70 trillion allergens can make their way into your home on any given day, generating more than 40
pounds of dust annually. The company includes their AccuClean Whole-Home Air Filtration system with each of their products. American Standard states that this filtration system can remove 99.98 percent of the allergens in your home, allowing you to breath cleaner air. Customers also have the option to add a humidifier into their unit as well to improve the moisture in the air. Between the filtration system and the humidifier, it’s entirely possible that the air quality in your home will improve drastically.

The company also says that each one of their systems is energy efficient. As opposed to some aircon brands, which measure energy efficiency on the ENERGY STAR scale, American Standard uses Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratios. Each one of the company’s HVAC products ranges between 14 and 21 on the SEER scale. The higher the rating on the SEER scale, the more energy savings you’re likely to see. One of the reasons why American Standard units are so efficient is because they contain a compressor that adjusts temperatures in small increments. Older HVAC models merely turned on and off, which required a lot of energy. Customers will also likely find that American Standard compressors are better than compressors from other brands, which tend only to have low, high, and off settings.

Another thing that tends to set American Standard apart from other aircon brands is their customer service. The company has helped Americans solve their heating and air conditioning needs since the 1880s. Between 2006 and 2011, the company had the highest overall dealer satisfaction rating. It’s clear that American Standard has dedicated themselves to serving their customers.

Unfortunately, it’s difficult to secure information about the price of American Standard HVAC systems. Some of the estimates we found online retailed an air conditioning unit. The company indicates that they build custom-designed systems to meet your home or business, which makes it difficult to lock down an exact price point. Factors determining price include:

  • The size of your building
  • Climate conditions in your area
  • Installation requirements

When it comes to securing a price for American Standard products, your best bet is to  contact a dealer. Your dealer can evaluate numerous factors and quote you a price for the new system. Additionally, American Standard says that dealers can also provide customers with information about government rebates and local promotions that you could also use to help cut your initial costs.

Dealers should be willing to work closely with customers to help them finance their new purchase. The Financing section of the company’s website states that they can “find the best solution for a monthly payment” so that their systems remain affordable. Your qualified dealer can provide you with more information about dates, program eligibility, restrictions, and other details.

Customers will also likely find that American Standard offers a competitive warranty. Although the warranty varies from product to product, the base warranty tends to be at least ten years. This can give customers incredible peace of mind knowing that they are choosing a reliable product and that if anything were to go wrong, free service is right around the corner.

Public Perception

Consumer Reports tends to conduct extensive surveys regarding heating and air conditioning units. Recent studies found that approximately 65 percent of American Standard owners were likely to be satisfied with their system by the fifth year of ownership. This speaks to the quality and durability of American Standard brands. Unfortunately, Consumer Reports could not provide information about repair costs for heating and air conditioning products. Without enough data from American Standard, the survey could not draw a proper conclusion about the costs.

When browsing online, it appears that many customers are satisfied with their American Standard purchase. For instance, one customer indicated that he or she was about to purchase an HVAC system from another aircon brand before a friend stepped in and advised them to look into American Standard. The individual is thankful for the friend, as he or she could not be happier with their system. Other online comments expressed similar sentiments. For instance, many comments said that American Standard was the best HVAC company around today. Many customers seemed satisfied with the purchasing process and the dealers with which they got the chance to work. They indicated that the process was seamless and that they felt comfortable the entire time.

Lastly, customers also raved about the quality of the products. One of the comments that stood out to use the most was that customers said American Standard systems were very quiet. Customers also appreciated that the products were energy efficient and that they were durable. Some said that the warranty process was simple.

How it Compares

No products found.

Another aircon brand you’re likely to come across during your search is Trane. Like American Standard, Trane offers energy-efficient heating and air conditioning products. However, when comparing the two units, one of the most significant differences that stands out is the warranty that the two companies offer.

While American Standard offers warranties of at least ten years on their products, the warranties on Trane products are significantly shorter. That’s because the company offers a five-year warranty on all products that are not registered and a ten-year warranty only on products that are registered. If a customer forgot to log their product, they would suffer significantly.

When it comes to price, the two brands offer products for similar costs. Realistically, the two brands are incredibly similar, and both would serve as worthwhile additions to a home or business. But because of the warranty and customer service that American Standard offers, we believe they earn a slight advantage over Trane HVAC products.

What We Think

If you’re in the market for HVAC products, American Standard is an option worth considering. First and foremost, the company has committed to energy efficiency. Customers can trust that no matter which product they purchase, they’ll receive a product that is energy efficient, thus helping to cut costs. Investing in an energy efficient product could save you money in the long run. While customers may be able to find some products that are more energy efficient than the American Standard brand, when you factor other things such as warranty and customer service, American Standard stands apart. The company has committed to making sure that the customer is satisfied, which is not something that every aircon brand can say.

From a product perspective, one of the things that stood out to us the most was the multi-stage compressor on each one of the American Standard products. The compressors were not only useful for controlling humidity, but they were also some of the quietest that we came across when conducting reviews of various HVAC products. In summary, we advise our readers to at least contact an American Standard dealer to learn more about what the company can do for you. The dealers should be attentive and sincere. If you any questions about cost, energy efficiency, or anything similar, the dealer should be more than willing to take the time to answer thoroughly. American Standard products are well worth the cost of a free consultation.

Coupons and Deals

At the time of publication, American Standard was offering a “Set the Standard” Sales Event. Customers also had the choice to choose zero percent APR for three years. When looking at the sales page, there were not product prices were not listed. Instead, customers are required to contact a dealer to learn about potential discounts. This is a bit of a nuisance, as it would have been nice to be able to see the prices initially. So, if you choose to purchase an American Standard product, be sure to diligently check with your reputable dealer to see if there are any deals available.

It also appears that the company has a section of their site dedicated to Promotions and Deals. Although these deals may impact everyone differently, the ability to draw these sales to your dealer’s attention could be beneficial. At the time of publication, the company was offering a Year-Long Financing Offer with zero percent APR for six years. Lastly, homeowners may find that they are eligible for the Federal Energy Tax Credit. This program offers a maximum tax credit who choose to make their home more energy efficient. However, there are only certain HVAC products that qualify for the credit, primarily based upon their energy efficiency rating. Be sure to mention the Federal Energy Tax Credit to your dealer.
