Air Conditioner Filters: Easy Steps To Replace It

filter

One of the key elements that are needed to ensure that AC units functions at their optimum capacity are air conditioner filters. Although they are hidden and don’t carry as much weight as the compressor, air conditioner filters need to be given a lot of attention. That’s exactly why new AC models come with check filter indicators.

But one thing that many people don’t realize when it comes to air conditioner filters is that replacing them is an easy DIY project. As much as your HVAC repairman may love coming to help you keep your air conditioner in tip-top shape, I know they don’t want to unnecessarily charge you for something you can do for yourself.

So how do you change air conditioner filters?

man checking the air conditioner filters

That’s an extremely great question. But before I give you a direct answer, let’s briefly take a look at the importance of air conditioner filters.

Air Conditioner Filters – What are they and Why are they So Important?

Ai conditioner filters are devices made from fibrous or porous materials. They aid in removing solid particulates such as dust, pollen, mold, and bacteria from the air that passes through the air conditioner. These AC filters are placed strategically in an air conditioning unit in order to keep pollutants from affecting the quality of the air the air conditioner channels into your home.

So why are air conditioner filters so important?

putting a air conditioner filter

1. Air Conditioner Filters Protect You fro m Harmful Pollutants

By virtue of their purpose, air conditioner filters filter out pollutants from the air outside and prevent them from being channeled into your home. This will protect you from allergens and other pollutants that can affect your respiratory organs.

In essence, clean air conditioner filters mean better indoor air quality for you and your loved ones.

2. Air Conditioner Filters Affect the Performance of Your AC Unit

As the air conditioner filter in your AC unit becomes dirtier or worn out, it starts to negatively impact of your AC unit. For one, because the pores in the filter are clogged, the blower will have to work harder. This extra strain will increase the rate of wear and tear on your air conditioner.

The opposite is also detrimental. An air conditioner that lets in dust and other particulates will lead to the components of the air conditioner getting damaged. The result of both effects is that there will be a decrease in comfort as the air flow and air quality won’t be as good as they should be.

And because of that, air conditioner filters need to be replaced regularly, and that’s also why you need to learn how to do the replacing yourself.

How to Replace Your Air Conditioner Filters – 6 Easy Steps

man replacing air conditioner filters

It is advisable to change air conditioner filters at least every 2 months. And when it is peak season once a month may be the best. Because of this frequency, you will end up burning a big hole in your pocket if you call your HVAC technician every time you need to replace an air conditioner filter.

To save you from blowing your money away, here’s the easy way of replacing your air conditioner filters.

1. Turn the Air Conditioner Off

When it comes to working with electrical appliances, one cardinal rule should never be ignored when repairing or maintaining it – make sure the appliance is completely switched off. This will make sure that you don’t run the risk of getting an electric shock as you work – something that can be fatal.

Another safety measure you need to take before you go ahead and replace your air conditioner filter is to put on a face mask and goggles to prevent dust from getting into your nose and eyes. Remember, the dust and debris trapped in the filter can be dangerous.

2. Locate the Air Conditioner Filter

Air conditioner filters are located in different locations depending on the type of air conditioner and the model you have. The best way to figure this out is of course to check your owner’s manual. But more often than not, air conditioner filters are located behind the main vent that lets out the cool air into your house.

Although most air conditioners may require you to take out a few screws in order to reach the filter, many new models now feature a slide-out filter. Another advancement in air conditioner technology that you nwill appreciate is that many filters are washable. This concept, however, has confused a few people as they assume that washable air conditioner filters don’t need replacement at all. This just isn’t true as they do need replacement, some every year depending on the manufacturer’s recommendation.

3. Remove the Old Air Filter

Once you have located the air filter, gently take it out being careful not to bump it onto anything as that will cause all the dust and debris to fall out on your floor. Make sure to dispose of the old air filter properly. If it is your first time removing the air filter, make sure to be extra careful to note the direction the filter faces and the type of filter your air conditioner uses. This will make it easy for you to put the new one in.

4. If the Filter Simply Needs Cleaning…

If the filter you are using is washable, make sure to note the date you are doing so. Dust it off, clean it with a damp cloth, and let it air dry.

5. Getting a Replacement Filter

If your air conditioner filter needs to be replaced, make sure to note the model number of your air conditioner, or better yet, of the filter. This will make it easy to know the exact type and size filter you need. If possible, you can carry your old filter with you as well. It can make it easier to find an alternative if the exact match is not available.

When it comes to getting a new filter, many people wonder whether they should get a HEPA filter or not. Well, this is debatable but in most cases, the simple truth is that most residential air conditioners can’t handle HEPA filters. This is because HEPA filters are made of a very fine mesh fabric that restricts air-flow. In order to get air to pass through, you will need a high-powered blower to do so. Something most residential ACs don’t have.

You are actually better off getting high-efficiency air conditioner filters. These work as well as HEPA filters do but don’t restrict air-flow as much.

6. Fit the New Air Filter

Now that you’ve succeeded to get a replacement filter, it’s time for your next victory – fitting the new filter. Before you fit the new filter, you will need to note 2 things first.

  • The date.
It is important that you note the date you are fitting the new filter as it will help you have a rough idea of the next air filter replacement date. Although most modern air conditioners come with an air filter indicator, taking note of the date will still prove to be useful in keeping tabs on the efficiency of the air filter.
  • Air-flow direction. Noting the direction in which air flows will help you know which direction the new air conditioner filter should face.

Fitting the new filter is basically the reverse process of removing it.

Air Conditioner Filters – Your AC Unit’s Lungs

a person's hand holding a air conditioner controller

Taking care of your air conditioner’s filter is something that you need to take seriously and religiously. After all, air conditioner filters are like your air conditioner’s lungs. Failure to do so may actually have a big impact on your own lungs as well. So please do take care to replace your air conditioner filters regularly. Your health depends on it.

American Standard Air Conditioner: Most Reliable Review

The last thing any homeowner wants is for their  American Standard air conditioner to malfunction during hot, humid weather. Unfortunately, this often happens if homeowners neglect their systems. If you’re looking for a new central air conditioner, you should consider an American Standard system, which rivals some of the Air-Con brands.

How to Maintain an Air Conditioning System

Before your central air conditioner stops working due to neglect, these tips can keep it in good shape, and they are easy to do.

GIVE OUTDOOR AC UNIT ROOM TO BREATHE

The outdoor unit, which is a condenser, needs to have space around it to allow air to circulate through it. However, if leaves, plants, grass or other debris is close to it, they can smother the system and make it work harder to send cold air throughout your house.

American Standard air conditioner service experts recommend regularly trimming grass, removing leaves, and other debris to give the unit good airflow. Do not place or plant anything within three feet of the unit, and if plants are already there, consider moving them. Then, you can put mulch or gravel around the condenser to prevent new plant or grass growth near it.

WASH OUT DEBRIS

After clearing access around the condenser, you should also wash it out. Some debris may be in the registers or inside the unit, so take the time to spray it out with a garden hose. Don’t use a power washer because the water pressure could damage
fan blades and registers, causing the unit to shut down. Washing it out can also remove pollen that could trigger allergy attacks.

CHANGE FILTERS FREQUENTLY

The filters of an  america standard air conditioner can clog, which restricts airflow through the system. The unit will need to work harder to push air through the dirty filter, which can shorten it’s live. However, if you change the filters about once every three months, then the air will easily flow through the filters and reduce the stress on the unit.

During hot summer months, you may need to change the filters more frequently. Check them at least once a month to see if they need replacing. Along with better airflow, you and your family will also breath cleaner air.

PARTIALLY CLOSE REGISTERS

If you have a two-story house, you can help the air flow more efficiently to keep the entire house cooler. Since hot air rises, the upstairs area is usually warmer than downstairs, which can keep triggering the american standard air conditioner to cycle on. To save energy, partially close the registers, or vent openings, downstairs to allow more cool air to flow upstairs.

However, do not close the vents all the way. Closing them completely can lead to the coil freezing and shutting down the system. If this happens, don’t panic. Give the coils some time to thaw, open the registers, and turn the system back on.

With the registers partially open, more cool air will flow upstairs, then drop to keep
the downstairs level cool, which will make the house more comfortable. Also, keep the registers free from dust and debris, so it doesn’t fly into the air when the AC unit is working.

GET THE SYSTEM SERVICED PROFESSIONALLY EVERY YEAR

Schedule an annual cleaning and inspection of your american standard air conditiooner unit every year to make sure they are in good shape, to fix any problems they may discover, and help it work more efficiently. Along with checking the lines, fan blades, motors, wiring and other inner workings of the units, having a professional service it will also check refrigerant levels to make sure you have enough for the upcoming season.

The best time to schedule maintenance is before you need to turn the AC on, which will vary geographical areas. In warmer areas, a late March or early April appointment may work well. In colder regions, you can probably wait until mid- or late May.

What is American Standard Air Conditioner and How does it Work?

American Standard Airconditioner in dark gray accent

American Standard Companies is a diverse business that began with manufacturing plumbing parts in 1875 and then bathroom fixtures. They also bought companies that specialize in medical diagnostic systems, automotive parts, and air conditioning. The company acquired Trane in 1983, which fit in with their air conditioning manufacturing business.

While they primarily sell their products under the Trane name, they also sell air conditioning systems under American Standard as well. Along with Trane, they sell:

  • Residential central air conditioning units.
  • Residential ductless air conditioning units.
  • Commercial HVACs.
  • Commercial and residential heat pumps.
  • Commercial and residential air handlers.
  • Residential furnaces.
  • Commercial air chillers.
  • Commercial ductless HVAC systems.

They also manufacture controllers and other parts through the Trane division. Since that division handles commercial cooling needs, they can customize systems to their clients through Building Services.

Company representatives can go onsite and get measurements, view the areas that require cooling, find the best placement for equipment, and then create a proposal for the companies with which they work. Many of their competitors in the residential market, such as Air-Con brands, cannot compete with American Standard aka Trane because they do not offer commercial equipment or services.

Trane also offers financing for their residential products, and seasonal and emergency maintenance. On the commercial side, they also design refrigeration systems for clients who need them. Also, they carry the parts for their systems for maintenance needs.

The air conditioning systems sold under the American Standard name includes six central air systems from the Silver 13 to the Platinum 20 and one low profile system. All the systems have multiple models. The low-profile models connect to a complete system for use in small or tight spaces, like beneath a porch or in a condo.

When looking for an American Standard system, it is better to go through a business that
sells them directly from the factory. Many online retail stores may only have their old models. Whereas a dealer will have the most current systems and they can order the size that your home requires.

What Makes American Standard  Air Conditioner Unique?

The American Standard Air Conditioner on the top of wood table and a leaves beside

There really isn’t anything unique about their AC systems, but American Standard air conditioner has a good reputation within the HVAC industry. Many homeowners find them to be reliable and require few repairs if homeowners perform routine maintenance on them.

One of the unique things about the company is that it doesn't sell residential window or through-the-wall systems, but they do have ductless models. They have what the industry calls mini-split and multi-split ductless systems. However, they don’t classify them as air conditioners.

Instead, their ductless models are sold under a separate category because they also act as a heat pump that heats, as well as cools homes. Since they only reference their central air systems under air conditioners, we will stick to that standard for the rest of the review.

Seer Ratings

Before going on to the next section, it's important to understand the ratings of AC units. Each American Standard air conditioner has a SEER rating, which stands for Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio. This rating is a requirement of the United States Department of Energy (DOE) and tells consumers how much energy a unit can expect to use in one year.

The higher the SEER rating, the more powerful the system, which uses more energy. For American Standard air conditioner, they have units like the Platinum 20 that has a SEER rating of 22.0 and the Platinum 18 with a SEER of 18.5. The ratings can give homeowners an idea of how much they will spend each year to keep their homes cool and comfortable.

Pricing

Many review websites consider the American Standard AC systems, as well as the Trane models, too costly. They claim there are comparable models on the market to rival these brands, even though some sites consider them to be among the best on the market.

For American Standard, the price breakdown is:

  • Platinum 20 with SEER 22 is $$$ for the system and $$$ if it includes installation.
  • Platinum 18 with SEER 18.5 is $$$ for the system and $$$ including installation.
  • Gold 17 with SEER 18 is $$$ for the system and $$$ with installation.
  • Silver 16 with SEER 17 is $$$ for the system and $$$ with installation.
  • Silver 14 with SEER 16 is $$$ for the system and $$$ with installation.
  • Silver 13 with SEER 14.75 is $$$ for only the system and $$$ including installation.

Most of the models range from 1.5 or two to five tons, which could affect the price as well. The larger the system, the more BTUs, or British Thermal Units it puts out, which is its energy consumption. The size of the unit you get will depend on the square footage of your home, and a dealer can help you find the best system for your needs. The pricing above also includes the 2.5-ton outdoor condenser units.

Public Perception

American Standard Outdoor Unit

As previously mentioned, American Standard systems, along with Trane, have a good reputation among both customers and review websites. The site Top 10 Reviews has them at number four on their list of the Best Top 10 Central Air Conditioning Brands. Trane rates right above them at number three.

The review mentions how quiet the units are, along with the sturdiness of the outdoor condenser units and how it can withstand the elements, resist corrosion, and won’t get dirty due to its finish. They also liked their high SEER ratings and their warranties.

The american standard air conditioner units have 10-year warranties that include the outdoor coil. Other brands have lifetime warranties, but they may not have the same SEER ratings. Top 10 Reviews give American Standard a score of 8.63 out of 10.

The review site Pick HVAC Cooling & Heating Guide has reviews by their readers who are also American Standard customers. Most of the reviews were favorable, with many buyers’ saying the systems were good quality, quiet, and did the job of cooling their homes very well.

A couple of the reviewers wrote that they were unhappy with their systems. One reviewer said he only had the system about two years before the compressor went out. The other negative reviewer said that he had had nothing but problems with the air conditioner because it broke down again after a repair. However, the positive reviews were more plentiful than the negative ones.

How it Compares

No products found.

The American Standard air conditioning systems have many competitors, but the Trane systems shouldn’t count as a competitor since they are an American Standard brand. However, other companies like Amana and Lennox systems are comparable to them.

The Amana brand came in number one on the top 10 list of best central air systems with many buyers. In comparison to American Standard, the Amana systems have a higher average SEER rating at 17.7 compared to 16.66. They also operate quietly, with both systems around 70 decibels, and the Amana has a sleeker design. Overall, this brand has a 9.15 rating out of 10 on this site.

Pricing for the Amana models is slightly higher than American Standard air conditioner and range from
$$$ for their SEER 24.5 model, the AVXC20, to $$$ for the ASX13 with SEER 14. These prices do not include installation.

The Lennox central air conditioners are number two on the site’s top 10 list of best central air conditioning units and have a rating of 8.85. The average SEER rating is 17.9, which is more efficient than the American Standard. Some of their units are also quieter at 59 decibels, but their inexpensive models can be much louder at 76 decibels.

Their units are multiple speed, which is more efficient. They offer a 10-year limited warranty, which is like the American Standard's, but their pricing for the units are higher than the American Standard. The Lennox XC21 with a SEER of 21 costs $$$ and their 13ACX with a SEER of 13 is $$$.

What We Think

With the positive reviews from customers and experts, including some AC servicing companies that noted their reliability and quality, we can recommend the American Standard central air conditioners to homeowners who need to replace their current systems.

It is important to note that an American Standard air conditioner should be bought from a dealer who can offer servicing and support after the sell. Also, they can help homeowners determine the size of the unit they need to keep their homes cool while providing the most efficient units to save money on their electric bills.

Compared to the other brands, they are comparable in quality and price, so the American Standard systems are a good choice, especially over Air-Con brands.

A Complete Review Of Wall Air Conditioner Types

Wall Air Conditioner

With the weather getting warmer every year, places that traditionally are not hot during
the summer have been sweltering. In many older buildings in cities like San Francisco, Seattle, or other areas near in the mountains or oceans, may not have air conditioning.

Fortunately, instead of relying on open windows and fans to stay cool, many air conditioners that are Air-Con brands can be hung on the wall to cool your apartment or
house.

What are Wall Air Conditioners?

If you’re shopping for an air conditioner for an apartment or house that doesn’t have central air conditioning, then you have a choice between window, through-the-wall air conditioners, and wall air conditioners.

Through-the-wall air conditioners are units that vent the rooms hot air through the back of it, so they need to mount through the wall to the outside of the house. A window AC unit vents the hot air from the sides, as well as the back of the unit.

However, some wall air units connect to a compressor outside and run lines from the unit inside of the house or apartment to the outside compressor to cool down the living space. There is still some installation they require to connect to the outdoor unit, but it is minimal.

Who Makes Wall Air Conditioners

No products found.

Several companies manufacture these wall units that are in homes all over the world. Many Asian companies build these smaller units, including:

  • Daikin
  • Toshiba
  • Samsung
  • Panasonic
  • Hitachi
  • LG

Some other companies also distribute these units, including Air-Con International, which
is a small company that distributes Air-Con brands.

What are Air-Con Wall Air Conditioners and How Does it Work?

No products found.

Air-Con distributes wall AC units that are also known as ductless mini-split or multi-split air conditioning units. They are a small company out of Pompano Beach, Florida that has been in business since 2003 and became a corporation in 2013.

Along with distributing AC units, they also provide heating, ventilation, and air conditioning service in the Pompano Beach area. Aside from distributing AC units under their name, they also distribute Daikin mini split ductless air conditioning units.

Ductless split AC units work by taking in the warm room air through an intake in front of the indoor unit and moves it over the coils to cool it. The refrigerant runs from the outdoor unit to the inside unit through a conduit to the coils. The pipe also contains a condensation drain line and a line for the electrical power.

These lines connect to the outdoor unit, which is a condenser/compressor through which the indoor hot air vents. The power of the unit will depend on the size of the room and the number of BTUs of the unit. BTUs or British Thermal Units tell how much warm air the unit can remove from the room in an hour. The more BTUs the unit has, the colder the air will be.

However, it is important to buy the right size unit because you will waste money if a unit is too big or too small. If the unit is too small, it will continuously run, which increases the amount of your energy use thus your electric bill. If the unit is too big, then it will run inefficiently and not properly dehumidify a room. By cycling off and on too much, it can also wear out the unit faster.

Measuring Rooms for BTUs

You’ll need to measure the rooms where you’re installing the indoor units, so you know how many BTUs it requires. BTUs are not an exact number, so knowing the size of the room is important. If your house was remodeled or built for you, then you should have that information from the builder telling the size of each room.

If not, you can find out by measuring the width and length of each room, then multiply those two numbers together. So, if a room is 10-feet long by eight feet wide, then the room is 80 square feet. 8 x 10 = 80. A 10-feet x 10-feet room would be 100 square feet.

The number of BTUs for units are estimates because each dwelling will have differences that are not taken into consideration. For instance, the insulation will be better in some apartments and houses than they are in others, the number of windows, the treatments on them, and whether the windows face the sun could also be factors affecting the BTUs.

For rooms that are:

  • 100 to 150 sq. ft. look for units with 5,000 BTUs
  • 150 to 250 sq. ft. = 6,000 BTUs
  • 250 to 300 sq. ft. = 7,000 BTUs
  • 300 to 350 sq. ft. = 8,000 BTUs
  • 350 to 400 sq. ft. = 9,000 BTUs
  • 400 to 550 sq. ft. = 10,000 BTUs

For rooms larger than 550 square feet, here is a chart that tells you how many BTUs that are necessary by clicking here.

Air-Con also distributes multi-split units, as well as mini-splits. The primary difference in them is that the multi-split units allow for setting different temperatures in different rooms. So, if your elderly mother is living with you, she can turn up the temperature in her room, and the other rooms in the house can be at cooler temperatures.

What Makes Air-Con Wall Air Conditioners Unique?

No products found.

Most of the air conditioning companies that manufacture or sell ductless split air conditioners just have mini-splits and do not sell multi-split units. While mini-split ductless AC units can be set up to cool an entire house, they usually only have one thermostat, so the temperature set in one room is the temperature in all rooms.

Air-Con sells multi-split units in which the person can set the temperature in the room. So, if someone doesn't want their AC unit to cycle on until the temperature reaches 80 degrees Fahrenheit, they can set it that way, while the rest of the house or apartment may cycle on at 76 degrees Fahrenheit.

Even though there is only one outdoor unit with a multi-split ductless system, there can be indoor units in several rooms. So, you could have one in the living room, bathroom, and three bedrooms in an older home that doesn’t have central air conditioning.

With this type of system, you don’t need to install ductwork throughout the house, which can save thousands of dollars when installing an AC system in your home. To determine how many BTUs the multi-split system would need to have, you add the square footage of each room of the house together to get the total.

So, if your home has 2,500 square feet, according to the chart, you would need a unit with at least 34,000 BTUs. Also, another unique feature is that the mini-split and multi-split units not only cool rooms, but they act as a heat pump and heat your home through them as well.

When the weather cools off, the system can be set to reverse the process to provide heat from the outside air to the indoor units. Although most older homes have furnaces, if they don’t have ducts, then they don’t have central heat. The mini- or multi-split units can work with the heaters to make your home cozy when it's cold outside.

Pricing

This type of air conditioning isn’t cheap, but they are more efficient than central heating and air systems. They can reduce energy use by up to 30 percent because cool or hot air isn't lost through the ducts as it would be through a centralized system. However, they are more expensive than portable air conditioners, window, and through-the-wall AC units.

The 12,000 BTU Air-Con mini-split unit shows the list price as $$ at one online retailer, a 9,000 BTU system has a list price of $$, while a 30,000 BTU system is listed for $$$. If you’re interested in a multi-split ductless system, the Air-Con 18,000 BTU system is $$$ list price, while the 24,000 BTU system is $$$.

Of course, many online retailers like Wayfair and Amazon have them at a discount, so you won’t need to pay list price. For instance, Wayfair has the 12,000 BTU mini-split system on sale at $$ and the 24,000 BTU multi-split model for sale at $$$. Amazon sells the 12,000 BTU unit for $$ plus shipping.

Public Perception of Air-Con AC Units

No products found.

The public perception for Air-Con mini-split ductless AC units is good. Out of 20 reviews on Amazon, a 12,000 BTU unit received a star rating of 4.2. About 80 percent of responders thought the unit was great because it was quiet and did a good job keeping rooms cool.

One responder wasn’t happy because the compressor didn’t work, and another gave it a one-star rating because it didn’t cycle off like he felt it should. However, his unit might have been too small for the size room he was trying to cool.

A review website for air conditioning systems, PickHvac.com, considers the Air-Con brands to be moderately priced and standard, rather than a premium, brand.

Closeupcheck.com complimented the 12,000 BTU mini-split Air-Con unit for having a quiet, compact design and features like:

  • A sleep mode in which the system operates silently.
  • An advanced inverter that keeps rooms at a consistent temperature.
  • A 24-hour timer.
  • Seven fan speeds on the indoor units.
  • Auto defrost.
  • Automatic self-cleaning that makes the unit easy to maintain.
  • Auto restart.

The site named it as number six out of the best nine mini-split air conditioners for 2018.

How it Compares

No products found.

The Air-Con mini-split ductless units have several competitors, though it is difficult to pick just one because the company, Air-Con International, doesn’t manufacture their systems. They contract with other companies like Hitachi and Toshiba to make the units and add their name to them. Then they sell and are responsible for the distribution of the units carrying the Air-Con name.

However, since they are considered by some reviews to be a standard brand, one of their direct competitors is Pioneer, their WYS012-17 is also a 12,000 BTU mini-split ductless system. Despite having many more reviews on Amazon, over 530 of them, they have a rating of only 4.3 stars.

Reviewers made a note of it being a good value, and it was easy to install and worked well in their homes. However, about 10 percent of the owners gave it a one-star rating because the system died after one purchaser had it for 30 days, and it took another buyer 10 weeks before it began to operate as expected.

Another reviewer loved the system and gave it five stars even though it wasn’t pre-charged with refrigerant. These systems are comparable to each other in features, except the Air-Con gives an output of 13,000 BTUs in heat mode, whereas the Pioneer may be more popular, it only produces 12,000 BTUs of heat.

What We Think

If you’re going to install a wall air conditioner in your home to cool it down in the summer, then a mini- or multi-split system from Air-Con could be the best way to go. Unlike portable, window, and through-the-wall units, they provide heat as well as cool down your house when it is hot outside. Yes, they do cost more, but you get more from them.

Also, the units compete very well with other brands in their category. While they may not
have the name recognition of a Pioneer, Toshiba, or Hitachi, Air-Con matches their features and quality very well, and, as in the case with the Pioneer system, they are usually less expensive. The Pioneer 12,000 BTU unit sells for $$, but the Air-Con is only $$ plus shipping.

Fewer companies manufacture or distribute multi-split ductless systems, but Air-Con brands carry one for people who want to let roommates, older children, or guests control the temperature in their rooms without changing the temperature throughout the house.

Besides, being able to set the ac unit on sleep could help parents keep their younger children comfortable at night without being too cold or hot during the middle of the night. If you're looking for an air conditioning system for your home, then we recommend buying the Air-Con mini- or multi-split ductless systems.

How Much Does It Cost To Replace An AC Compressor?

AC compressor

Out of all the parts of Aircon units, the compressor is easily one of the most important. Unfortunately, like all parts in machines, it's going to wear out. When that happens, replacing the AC compressor is usually cheaper than replacing the entire unit. Here's what you can expect.

Replacing The AC Compressor In A Car

No products found.

Prices for a new AC unit for a vehicle typically range from $ to $$, depending on the size and style, with another $$ to $$$ for labor. You don't have to buy the labor if you're capable of doing it yourself, though it's always better to let a professional handle it if you're not sure you can take care of it.

Several factors influence the price you should expect to pay, starting with whether or not you want to get aftermarket parts. Unlike some other parts of the vehicle, it's okay to get
an aftermarket AC compressor. In most cases, they make little or no noticeable difference in the operation of the AC unit. Since the quality is about the same, the lower price makes them a smarter purchase.

ac compressor of a car

While many stores sell the AC compressor separately, there's one major problem with doing the replacement yourself: the refrigerant. You cannot merely drain the coolant the way you would oil. Improper drainage of this chemical can be dangerous, and you need a particular machine to remove it. Unless you have one of the most unusual houses in the nation, you don't have this machine at home.

Fortunately, there is a solution. Most mechanics have the necessary equipment, and many of them will be willing to drain the refrigerant from your car for a small fee. This is much cheaper than the labor cost of a full repair job, and it's the best way to go if you want to do it yourself and save some money.

Whether you want to do it yourself or you're willing to pay for someone to do it for you, remember to look around and find a mechanic with a good reputation. Don't be afraid to get competing offers. The last time we needed work done on our vehicle, the second garage we checked gave us a bid that was half of the other location's offer. It does pay to shop around.

Replacing The AC Compressor In A Home

No products found.

This is trickier to price than replacing the unit in a car but on the whole, the fact that the parts of Aircon in homes are more substantial means that it's more expensive to replace them. Here are the primary factors that will determine the price.

Tonnage/Compressor Size

Tonnage sounds like it refers to the physical size of the unit or how much air is moved, but neither of those is correct. The tonnage of an AC compressor refers to how much heat is removed from the air, and the compressor size is directly correlated to the tonnage size.

This is a case where bigger is not necessarily better. If you're thinking about 'upgrading' to a better air compressor while the old one is broke, stop right there. If your compressor is too small, it will overwork itself and never shut down. That will drastically increase your electricity bill and wear the parts out much faster.

On the other hand, if your unit is too large, it will turn on and off more than it should. That will also wear out the parts, and worse, it can lead to uneven temperatures in your home as everything experiences rapid heating and cooling.

All Systems Mechanical, an installation company, has an excellent guide to tonnage and room sizes for home AC here. Note that these sizes are for central air conditioning units, not individual room units. Those are much smaller, easier to calculate, and easier to replace in their entirety if a significant part fails. (This may be cheaper, especially if they're on sale.)

Your central AC unit should have a waterproof sticker on it that states the tonnage and other relevant information. If you don't know - and most people don't - check for this. If you don't have a label, you may be able to research it online.

Labor Costs

This varies mainly on location. In cheaper areas, you can expect a price of $$ to $$ for labor, based on the size of the unit you’re replacing. In more expensive areas, prices typically range from $$$ to $$$. As always, it's best to get several bids to be sure the first one isn't trying to cheat you.

Avoiding AC Scams

No products found.

Believe it or not, there are scams related to replacing AC compressors. Here are the most common scams and how to handle them.

Scam #1: Suggesting Parts Need Replacement When They Don't

This is usually done by technicians who want to sell you a whole new unit, rather than accepting the lower pay for a repair job. In most cases, an AC fails because of one part going bad. This is easily prevented by getting multiple bids for the repair job - if everyone says various elements need replacement, you know they're telling the truth. If only one does, avoid them.

Scam #2: One Bid Is Way Lower Than The Others

Cheaper is better, right? Well, not always. If a bid is too far below the others you get, it's probably because the company is willing to cut corners and hopes the lower bill distracts you. A smaller invoice now is not worth it if it's going to lead to another repair job when all is said and done - maybe even from the same company that did a shoddy job in the first place.

Scam #3: Not Providing A Written Agreement

Every reputable company will provide a written quote - usually on a standard form describing the job - before they leave. The reason for this is simple. They know that having an offer in your hand can help them land the job, especially if you're comparing prices from several different companies.

Any company that refuses to provide a written agreement about the job is probably doing something wrong.

part of an ac compressor

Scam #4: A Salesman Shows Up

Air conditioner repair jobs do not require a salesperson - all they need is a technician. Every reputable company knows how to get the parts they need and, in general, they're not going to give you any additional things to choose from.

The repairman might ask if you've had any other problems, and they may try to sell you on a full inspection of the rest of your HVAC system. That's okay - you can say yes or no. However, if someone tries to show you a bunch of new systems and talk you into buying something you don't need, send them away.

Scam #5: Selling Too Much Refrigerant

This is one of the sneaky things technicians may try to do. By "selling" more refrigerant than you need, they can discreetly increase the price of the job. In most cases, the coolant they add needs to be weighed before and after the installation, with the numbers recorded in an ongoing ledger.

The best way to deter this is simple: Watch the repair job. If you observe the technician, chances are they're not going to try and cheat on the numbers. You don't need to loom over them or anything - merely keep an eye on things from a reasonable distance.

Scam #6: Insisting The Unit Needs Immediate Replacement

Unless your air conditioner is literally on fire, it doesn't need to be replaced immediately. This is a scare tactic that some companies use to try and pressure you into buying an expensive new unit without thinking about it. Even broken parts like leaking pipes are relatively easy to replace, and it costs far less to do so than a brand-new unit would.

Scam #7: Charging For Extra Work

Technicians cannot charge you extra for additional work that needed to be done on the parts of Aircon in your home. Any extra labor, like replacing other parts to get at the broken one, should be included in the original estimate. Hold firm and only pay what's listed in the written agreement.

Getting multiple estimates helps stop this scam, too. If all that extra work needed to be done, you can ask, then why didn't anyone else notice it when they inspected the unit? There is no reason to believe that a group of professional inspectors all failed to see some work.

Scam #8: Demanding Cash Upfront

No. Reputable companies do not ask for cash payments before they do the work. If a technician asks for this, politely ask them to leave and tell them that you're no longer interested in their services. They may not even be working for a real company.

Checks and cards are a much better choice. Most of them come with added consumer protections and can be reversed if there's a problem with the service you received. It's far harder to get your cash back.

Top 5 Casement Window Air Conditioner In The Market Today

While choosing a casement window air conditioner, you need to consider factors such as cooling capacity, installation, electrical requirements, energy efficiency, and maintenance needs. Cooling capacity should be the primary consideration. Cooling power is measured in British Thermal Units or BTUs per hour. It is the basic measure of thermal energy.

For the best results, choose a unit with a BTU level suitable for your room's area. A window AC with too little BTU power will run continuously to cool a large space. In this process, it will consume more energy and will eat up your energy budget. A window AC that's too large for your space won't cool and dehumidify your space evenly. Your room air will be susceptible to uncomfortable hot and cold pockets. So, choose the one with the right thermal efficiency. For  installation of your casement window air conditioner Window Air Conditioner, seek the help of a qualified contractor.

Make sure that your existing electrical system can support the casement window air conditioner's electrical requirements. Most room air conditioners operate on 115-, 125- or 220-volt circuits. ACs with cooling capacities below 15,000 BTUs usually run on standard residential (115- to 125-volt) circuits. The electrical requirements such as voltage, amps, and watts will be listed in the specifications when you purchase the unit.

Coming to energy efficiency, The best casement window air conditioners are more economical than central air conditioners. They cost less and cheaper to operate. To gauge a unit's energy efficiency, consider the Energy Star rating and/or EER number mentioned. The higher the EER, the more efficient the air conditioner will be. Look for the air conditioners that have an EER of at least 10 for the best efficiency and cost saving.

Energy Star-rated room air conditioners use approximately 10 percent less energy. Such air conditioners come with features such as timers, digital thermostats, and multiple cooling speeds. Proper maintenance is essential to keep the air conditioner in top condition. Clean the unit from dirt and dust that accumulate inside or on the back at regular intervals. Clean the dust and particles from the unit's air filter to keep the unit energy efficient.

What Is A Rheem Air Conditioner?

rheem air conditioner

The Rheem Air Conditioner is a popular product released by Rheem Air Company. Rheem is a brand widely used by businesses and homeowners. This air conditioner is particularly popular among contractors and dealers in the HVAC technologies.

Rheem designed this product to maximize the efficiency of its features while keeping the price low enough to be accessible to all consumers. The air conditioner comes in many different types with different speeds and model characteristics.

Product Specs

The Rheem Air Conditioner has a number of unique features.

Modulating Burners

First off, these air conditioners have a modulating temperature feature. This means they can offer the best climate control and are capable of unbalancing temperatures. With modulating burners, they can control dehumidification during their cooling cycles with a variable speed motor.

These modulating burners are present in most of the air conditioners Rheem puts out. Rheem values them highly for their ability to convey accurate temperature controls. These burners also increase the air conditioners' effectiveness and efficiency.

Efficiency

Rheem Air Conditioners have been designed to maximize efficiency. Rheem aims to help consumers reduce their energy expenditure as much as possible.

Air conditioners have what is known as a SEER rating. This rating describes an air conditioner's efficiency. The Rheem Air Conditioner has SEER ratings of up to 19.5. The higher the rating, the more energy efficient an air conditioner is. This means that Rheem air conditioners are quite efficient. An example of a 19.5 rated air conditioner is the Rheem Prestige RASL-JEC Central AC.

Comfort Control System

The comfort control system is present in the Rheem Prestige line of air conditioners. This special system provides on-board diagnostics and history error codes. These will help consumers identify any issues they encounter when dealing with the air conditioner. The system also has a convenient service call alert it can make to the thermostat.

These air conditioners also have programmable thermostats. The advantage of this feature is that it can save consumers a great deal in their electric bills. It will also help users cool their home according to their chosen schedule.

Noise Level and Refrigerant

Another significant feature is the air conditioner's noise level and refrigerants. Rheem prioritized these aspects to accommodate consumers bothered by the noise created by most air conditioners. The Rheem air conditioner stays within decibel levels between 65 and 70. This means these air conditioners are particularly quiet.

The Rheem air conditioner uses Puron refrigerant.

Pricing

Depending on the particular model, Rheem air conditioners range between $$$ and $$$. What accounts for such a wide range of prices? The price varies not only by model but also by size, features, and whether or not the customer wants the system installed for them.

Reviews: Noria Air Conditioner

No products found.

Recent advances in air conditioning technology have changed the features of these machines. Such changes in this technology have made our homes and offices cooler and more comfortable in the summer seasons. A Noria air conditioner is a quality air conditioner that is well-designed and processes the air in a room through a refrigeration cycle. During this process, the warm air is removed from the room and replaced by cooler air with more humidity.

Noria air conditioners are renowned for their outstanding quality and performance in the window air conditioning field. When choosing an air conditioner, we recommend considering various factors to get the most value out of your investment.  You should review the features, quality, reliability, cost, and warranty of the air conditioner that you intend to choose.

Whether you plan to buy a new air conditioner or replace the existing one, the first thing you have to consider would be the brand and model. The AC that you choose must be capable of cooling the area of your dwelling efficiently and effectively. Many choose the wrong type of unit and are disappointed due to poor performance. To avoid such disappointments, consult a qualified AC contractor who will evaluate the area you are looking to cool, the number of people living in the space, type of roof, and the internal/external temperature fluctuations. Based on these factors, they can suggest the right air conditioning unit.

using remote to turn on aircon

Ensure that the unit recommended is of the right capacity and SEER rating so that your room will be cooled effectively. Also, take into account the cost, installation charges, and warranty offered by the dealer before choosing a particular brand. You will have to discuss with the contractor all aspects of cooling load calculations. It is a good idea to get a copy of the technical details and other relevant information concerning the air conditioner and the installation.  A reliable contractor would suggest the right AC that is energy efficient and tuned for superior performance.

For maximum efficiency and saving on your energy budget, it is wise to invest in a high-efficiency air conditioner. The efficient air conditioners will have a SEER of 13 or more. If you are planning to replace your existing unit, it is better to replace the whole system to ensure quality.  The installer will run a diagnostic of your system to make sure there is no leakage in the duct system, disconnected ducts, or in the joints.

man installing air conditioner

Proper installation of the AC unit is essential for greater efficiency. Installation should be done only by professionals for the best performance of the unit. The installation requirement may allow for different models of air conditioners. During installation, provision must be made for cleaning and servicing of the unit. Avoid installation in places that receive direct sunlight. There should be a free flow of air in the area chosen for installation. Also, ensure that the unit is safe from debris and other foreign objects.
